Windows 7 better than XP?

Guys, Windows XP was a MASSIVE leap in both stability, useability, and functionality from Windows 95.

XP rocked, and even now it still holds its own with the above factors.

Vista....well Vista was let's be honest...an abortion. It was the software that MS should have aborted during its development, but they let this sluggish, bloated, and overly useless software hit the shelves, trying to pretend it was "Great".

Vista sucked. Now Windows 7...this is an altogether different beast.

It is stable, secure, and so flexible and configurable it can be used and learned by anyone.

I used to run Win XP on a 2005 laptop (1.8GHz centrino, 2GB RAM). I tried to install Vista onto it and O M G, you would think I had tried to install an Apple OS on it.

It eventually installed, but took about 7-9 minutes to boot from cold and it ran like a dead legless horse...it was really that slow.

Windows 7 however runs like a DREAM. it boots from cold in about 2 minutes and since I started using 7 it has NEVER EVER crashed/frozen or blue screened - now that is stable.

It also makes me forget that my laptop is nearly 6 years old. It runs as sweet as a nut. Granted I took the memory upto 4GB. But I can have the following running SMOOTHLY at the same time;

  • Firefox with about 80 tabs open (isn't IM wonderful)
  • Photoshop
  • Dreamweaver
  • Thunderbird
  • XSite Pro
  • Filezilla
  • A few others...
So short answer is just GET Windows 7. Don't even hesitate to get it. You will smile and you'll never look back! :)

IF someone moves from Vista to 7 it's the best thing since sliced bread. If they move from XP to 7, it'll be like a step down, not much, but as a performance fiend XP eats it alive. (Also bare in mind my XP uses about 100MB just showing desktop and 7 uses about 600MB.)

Unless you like pretty buttons and other pointless shit, XP licks it. Also, if you do rendering in Open GL, 7 won't touch it. According to my friend who is a 3D visualisation professional and uses, mainly, 3DSM and V-Ray. He was using 7 and went back to XP.
 
Am I the only one who hates win7??

I've always been using xp, although I like getting with my time so I bought vista a couple of years ago...hated it!

I recently bought a new laptop with win7 on it and I really don't like it at all. there are some cool features on it yes but it is just not the same. For no reasons it freezes for like 20 seconds and then works again. Never had any problems win xp ever.

be sure you can run the programs smoothly on win7 what you used to run on xp, so if you can run them without any problem and you also have the needed hardware configuration, go for win7, if not then stick with xp
 
Definitely go with 7. It's awesome.

With what you are doing, you might want to get the 64 bit version and up the RAM. You can always create some VMs and dedicate memory elsewhere.
 
Windows XP was a great operating system, but Windows 7 is much better. I would go with the Ultimate Edition. Also, its best to buy it or get it from MSDN, since you have no idea what can be snuck into a cracked copy.
 
I've been using Windows 7 since Rc1 and I love it I have it running on 4 machines and I have not seen one blue screen. Works a lot better than vista which was a pos reminded me of millennium crap of the os.
So yeah I love windows 7 haven't you notice I'm a mac and pc commercials stopped when win 7 came out.
 
go for windows 7

microsoft develops a new good OS every 2 versions

e.g. windows 98 Good , windows ME shit, windows XP good, windows vista shit, windows 7 good ... get it ? :D
 
I know XP like my ten fingers and no time to learn this 7. I love XP and let it be.
 
For me there's not much to recommend Windows 7 over XP -- more nanny dialog boxes, a slower shell, and shiny see-through windows that nobody cares about.

Sorry Marquist im my opinion you are wrong. Finally at work I had chance to upgrade my old XP laptop to Windows 7 and the performance improvement was dramatic running the same software. It boots faster, the OS is more responsive and apps open faster. It looks good too but it's easy to turn off resource hogging features. That said, I will say the key to performance is to have 3 or 4 gigs of memory.

I've been running Windows from 3.0 to the present and this is one of the better Microsoft releases. In order here are my favorite all time OS's:

1. Ubuntu 10.x (try it on a old machine, you will love it!)
2. Windows 2000 - stable and ran everything
3. Windows 7
4. Windows 3.1 (After 3.0 this was actually stable and you could run multiple apps)
5. XP

Most hated:

1. Anything Millennium
2. Bob
3. Windows 3.0 (so cranky, so unstable)
4. XP (love-hate thing going on)
5. Anything DOS

I didn't add Vista because frankly I was okay with it. It was stable for me but it just seemed, I don't know, tired.

Windows 7 is the best OS after 98. Even better than XP and far far better than vista.

While I was using XP I used to format my PC every 3/4 months because of errors and virus etc but I haven't formatted my PC for 8 months after installing windows 7.

Windows 7 is the best OS so far by M$.
 
I think that Windows 7 is better than XP. It doesn't use too many resources, is stable,secure and good looking.
You should give it a try
 
Windows 7 is a buggy Vista with XP features. I`m sticking with XP, I don`t need an OS with preinstalled backdoor in it.

Not sure what you are saying is from experience but I have been running Windows 7 for weeks at a time without the need for a reboot. Moreover; with the few application crashes I have seen, and believe me I torture my computers,Win 7 seems to recover quite nicely as well.
 
i have 7 running on my new laptop currently. my desktop and other laptop are both still running xp.

so far i haven't really found any issues with 7 (outside of the normal ones associated with running an x64 OS variant).

i have some issues with certain aspects of it such as the logical organization of parts of the UI and some of the general styling, but those are really just personal preference things. i tend to be a minimalist in that regard and sometimes the styling is a bit much for me. again, personal preference.

as far as stability it's so far been quite excellent. granted my main workhorse for running programs is my desktop (it functions more as a server than a PC) so i can't attest to how 7 handles high load yet, but from what i have seen so far from day to day use and fairly substantial .NET development i think it will do just fine.

the only reason my other two computers remain XP systems is because i'm not going to go an fix what isn't broken. they both run very well in their current configurations so i would rather not take down time and risk of a botched upgrade on two mission critical systems.

when the times to comes to replace them however, i will happily get new win7 machines to take their place. although i may just replace the desktop with a win2008 server unit and call it a day.
 
Sure windows 7.
it has a lot of new features that save your time and enhanced visual appearance of programs.
also It don't have bad performance effects. especially when you have 4 GB Ram,
I have like you 4 GB on dell machine with i5 processor.
actually when I use my laptop (winxp) I some how get bored for the lake of the new features.
also in sometime, Microsoft will cancel support for Win XP.
so be up to date Dear :)
