I'm wondering if this would affect rating and/or count as duplicate content:
if website/page is for example "5 great graphic design programs" and you post those 5 programs there with description to them copied to the letter from the official websites

It will count as duplicate content, and so what?
there is no duplicate content penalty in big G, big G tries to figure out witch result is the most relevant for the searcher and displays that.
Most webshops has the same product description that they got from the manufatur and they all rank, if you want to rank at the top you just gotta make google see your content as more relevant
 
If a user is going to find it useful then sure do it. But you should probably add a rel="canonical", I think?
 
yes google thought will be duplicate content of your website low traffic..so rearrange or jumble the words
 
It is for sure duplicate as this content has already been indexed by google in a different website which has higher rank then your website. If your wish to bypass this, then create/add something different inside the content which is new and unique then google will take your post as new/unique to index..:)

LOL this is just wrong. There 100% IS a duplicate content penalty and people get hit with it all the time. Not sure where you got your information but this is totally and completely wrong.
 
why do people think that google hasn't thought of this and isn't hunting for your lazy blackhat hides

That entire duplicate content issue confuses many members on this forum.

  • Some members say that there is no duplicate content penalty at all.
  • Some members think the duplicate content penalty is the same as the pure spam penalty.
  • Some members think even having 1 duplicate sentence on your site is grounds for a penalty.

While the Duplicate Content section in the Search Console help page doesn't ever refer to a duplicate content penalty directly, it does allude to some action in the form of a pure spam penalty from a manual review ("However, if our review indicated that you engaged in deceptive practices and your site has been removed from our search results, review your site carefully") being taken against websites with malicious duplicate content.

Anyway, please refer to the posts below.

You might get a poor quality penalty, but not a duplicate content penalty.
It will not get you banned, and it is not a waste of time. In fact if use it and give credit to the original site, it actually helps.

There are smarter things to do, (as steel says), but it is far from a no-no.

And it is not duplicate content. If it were, and Google banned such things, there would only be one copy of anything in the Internet.

News sites would be out of business.

Don't ever add this tag unless it's for another page that belongs to you

It works like 301 redirect but on pages scale. It will move all the juice from your page to the other one. I don't think you want t sacrifice your ranking for another website, do you ?
 
I want to clarify that in my example the page doesn?t just copy another website. It copies 5 different descriptions, from 5 different websites, on 5 different programs.
My question might be harder than it seems. Because if you think about it, every word would be ?duplicate content? if google crawl bots, for example, didn?t have some kind of same word count measurement/placement. But I have no idea how they work. I?m more interested if they are smart enough to find 5 different blocks of text on my website, and decide that it is copied, and drain my page deep in search engine results because of that. and what if it is not 5 blocks, if it?s 10, at which point the drowning begins

Yeah, OP was talking about duplicate content on his own site. So would you use the rel=canonical if you get a snippet of blog content for the /blog page and add the tag to the 'read more' link?
