Yes. Last time I checked, backlinks improve rankings (not a news, as this has been like that the past 20 years).

depends on your keywords
and the quality of the backlinks
but essentially, it is part of the ranking factor

I say back links are most important to improve ranking and to keep the position. As much you keep your site content unique and its low competitive you can rank even easier with back links.

Its plays really a big factor in ranking so you know, but obviously you have to maintain the quality.

Yes it helps to do proper backlinks but if not quality/contextual you may wash you ass with them . I recommend high quality sources otherwise you may get worst results. Personal I only buy from 1 source that I tryed so far and is good.

if your site already ranked without backlinks, then it should be improve if u use backlinks (quality backlinks not spam)

but again, there is no guarantee.
