Awesome video about how AI is going decimate the workforce (including ecommerce stores) and force a lot of entrepreneurs and businesses like our's to "adapt or die".

Doom and gloom or legitimate concern?

carry on adapting with new trends and software .

there no reason to worry .

as it comes so does new sofware and methods which will be fun.

That rhymes!

Poetry baby.

Beyond that, it's also about looking at where your industry is headed. Very few people seem to be concerned about AI simply because they think it's decades away from replacing them.

A lot of people are going to be unemployed very soon unless they're smart enough to adapt.

Not even very soon. People have continuously been replaced by new tech in general for a very long time now. As of 2018, people are being and have been replaced by AI specifically.

You're 100% correct, but there's never been something like this before because we've always needed people. It's difficult to think of any role in any industry that isn't going to get wiped out.

What job would you tell your kids to do?

Before the car, there was no travel business. Cars allowed the middle class to have family vacations. Travel business is beyond huge. The person selling horseshoes had no idea (how could he?) about the massive growth. Still, as you notice, his knowledge of the future did not matter squat. That's where you are at this point.

What job would you tell your kids to do?

Job? Shouldn't your goal be inter-generational wealth so that your kids wouldn't have to do jobs?

i'm still uncertain how AI will affect this shady business of ours, directly. I mean i can see how it will get rid of all the middlemen, but those offering comprehensive marketing services, those offering complete businesses, those working as consultants in this field - i geniunely don't know what kind of AI is around the corner to disrupt that side of things.

AI Will help me alot but then again the grunt work can already be done by plugins/scripts.

My mum already stocked up on an arsenal of weapons and built a bomb shelter. They all said she was loopy, who's laughing now.

Love this AI will be kill everything soon threads...
Show me some true AI that is broadly used! Sure ML will have a huge impact on low end tasks but so far it's all supervised learning for the most part so you can put a machine on a task it has never ever completed and it will learn by itself.

Really interesting discussion. Let me give you some real world examples that include friends and family:

My brother-in-law is a director at one of the largest international consultancy firms who's immediate focus is getting AI and robitics live right now for their clients. Their aim is to reduce costs by eliminating the need to employ people.

He's 1000% convinced that most of the population will be out of a job within the next 5-10 years.

My best friend works at one of the largest insurance company in the UK - they recently brought in AI to monitor and optimize employees (until it broke lol).

My other brother-in-law owns a small chain of pharmacies. He found out that in the UK there will be central warehouses to house pharmaceuticals which will also dispense medication using robotics and AI. He knows he has to make his money now before it goes live (roughly 5 years away).

My cousin works in AI and is convinced that most people will lose their job including accountants, admin staff, marketers, middle management etc.

There's a few Youtube TED talks worth watching. AI processes thought 20,000 times faster and in terms of research, will in 1-week equate to 200-years of human research.

Yes new opportunities may exist, but the smoking pistol is this: If the world is accelerating at 200-years of technological advancement in 1 week, then there's virtually no role that we can train for, imagine or comprehend. All we can do is sit and watch it unfold.

Thoughts?

Sorry, but 5-10 year for most to be out of a job due to AI is just not going to happen. Automation d just using robots has been the norm (see mostly all car manufacturers), but TRUE AI does not exist at this point if you are sure it does show us ;)

Will automation continue and replace the total entry-level jobs? Sure has been the case for very long. Now if there was true AI, would you not think Google, MS, FB etc would use it already on their chatbot frameworks? Sure they have ML but its far from AI, as it is (just as everywhere else) supervised learning. Show me one robot that gets a new task and knows it right by itself. They need to be fed a bunch of data, and even at say playing an easy video game it will take them very long to get to the same (crappy) way of playing as humans.

And sorry, largest international consultancy firm != expert in ML/AI.

Will it change the future, sure thing. But these end of world kind of scenarios are still too far-fetched at this point.

RTheir aim is to reduce costs by eliminating the need to employ people.

The goal of any technology is to do exactly that. You used to need 20 people to till a field. Now, it takes a single person with a track in a few hours. The very civilization that we enjoy is a function of exterminating jobs. Yet despite that, the number of people being employed today and the standard of living worldwide is the highest ever by amazing margins of difference. This is a critical understanding. Jobs are a byproduct of production. The more production you have, the more jobs get created. Why? Because when you have wealth, you spend it in either consumer goods or investment (capital goods).

Tell him a guy from the internet says he has no idea about how the world works :)

I think one of the main issues is that AI is such a buzzword these days that anybody that here said things about the movies and robots and speaking and natural language and knowing everything by himself being Superior in every field.

That shows you who actually knows something about AI , not an expert but someone who has worked in the field and the other ones that just are picking up on the buzz, because again most companies have no clue about it, and neither have most so called consultants (I mean if individuals get a sign-up bonus of 1-2 million dollars starting to work for an AI company than you know I think enough said)

Put simply, current machine learning consists almost entirely of scripts designed to analyze large sets of data to find trends.

Useful for obvious reasons; not really a game changer in the grand scheme of things.
This.

Take a chatbot , why do I have to train it on some stuff even a little kid would understand? Sure they have some data prebuilt into it but you need to train it for every single specific vertical. Now if it was true AI it would understand the parts of the conversation maybe not the subject matter expertise but it doesn't even grasp the conversation unless you train it so much for AI
