I am currently working for a client in the hotel business in my country, I already built the website and had a good idea for capturing email addresses, I did some thinking and some research and found a few services that offer custom wifi software, the simple gist of it is to flash the modem with the new firmware and pay a small monthly fee for their web software to track and do all the analytics.

The hotel gets 400 visitors daily in the season, that includes the restaurant, fast food, caffe of the hotel.

So my idea was to offer free wifi to the guests, get them to sign in with either facebook, twitter, instagram or just the email address, put a small checkbox for "receiving promotional material", do some kw research in the traveling niche and send them high quality and helpful content with some offers in the mix, was thinking the usual 80/20 ratio.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Sounds great. That's how a lot of cafes in Amsterdam do it nowadays.

Free WiFi is basically a commodity these days. I'm not sure many users will sign up for your newsletter just because of the free WiFi. Anyway, it's a good idea, but IMO you should offer something more to get them to sign up.

Op can simply make a terms of service page stating that the user automatically signs up to their news letter once they accept to use the free wifi services. There would be no need for the checkbox after that.

This is not only a good idea but it's already a business model. To log into the wifi system of the barber that I go to, it prompts you to like them on Facebook in order to log in, this creates mass free advertising for them as it appears of everyone's newfeed that you're getting your hair cut at a certain location. In my experience, people are more than happy to spew inane facts about their life like this onto social media, so it's win win.

A Burger King at my place is doing that! Getting emails in return of free wifi. Go for it OP.

Look up brick and mobile. They have a reseller program exactly like this. I've not personally used it but know a couple of the people behind it and it looks very close to what you're talking about.

Yes true but the situation is a little different with travelers, no one wants to pay roaming charges and only some buses offer wifi so its in high demand when they arrive at the destination.

But was thinking about a free local attractions ebook as a lead magnet
