Why the PBN hype?

301 redirect is way more powerful. I would say first add some content on the site [few hundred words] related to your niche, get it indexed and then 301 it.

If your plan is to only add 1 money site link on the pbn, then definitely go with the redirect.

Putting contextual links to your money site is a lot safer play. Imagine Google seeing 5-10 re-directs to your site...not going to be a good outcome IMO.... Doing a few is ok. If you get around 2-3 high powered domains that will pass a ton of juice then do both. But keep the 301's to a min. Use the rest as good link building... Good question though...

In that case, since I would like to take advantage of 10-20 expired domains I should probably build a pbn, sigh. Thanks for the feedback. Anyone have any experience as too how many 301s are too many?

Redirect is redirect, anchor keyword is anchor keyword

On another note, OP think about it logically.
1 Domain= $10/year

If you just 301, you have 1 domain and whatever backlink profile it comes with.

If you build it as a PBN, you have the domain, the backlink profile it comes with to index and juice the links you build on it, and complete control of the content and links you build on it. All for that same $10/year.

Needless to say, you can end up building links to many different niches, sites, etc, from the same domain.

I personally think it's a matter of time before the hole closes though. It's been getting way too much attention.

Good Luck.

A PBN concept is different from an aged domain aimed at redirecting to your money site. With a PBN, you could link to many different moneysites from a single domain, whereas in the 301 option, you are looking at redirecting multiple domains at a single site.

The thing is, if you do a PBN right I feel like there is no hole to close. Cover your tracks correctly, make each blog actually look like a real blog, maybe hire someone to indefinitely write for the blog at a set interval, link out to other sites that are relevant other than your own, how is it any different than any other real, 100% whitehat blog?

The clue is in the "private" part, you want to make the PBN look like its not owned by the same person and keep that fact private from prying eyes (google/competitors). 301ing these domains will make it obvious that you own all these domains and are trying to game the system, this will result in google penalties once found/reported.

The best thing to do with PBN sites is write articles and give the juice to your money sites. If you've 5/6 money sites and you've already writed 6 articles in all PBN's blogs, than you can sell backlinks as service. So, the 301 Redirect it's double-edged sword for 2 reasons:
- it's hard to find good blog in your same niche and with relevant backlinks for it;
- you can redirect only 1 money site/page

But if you setup a PBN you can make a blog on a big and extended niche and this can be better if you've the intention to build more and more money sites in this niche.

What do you mean by "no hole to close"? I think you might be thinking about it too much. If it's something small, something that's not going to have thousands of links and get abused with sold links, then in my opinion you will be fine.

Heh, I'm from the camp that says any form of unnatural link building is blackhat. Whether you have someone posting on your blog or not, it's just camouflaged link building. In this sense, whitehat is something that was made up to create division between marketers where one is pitchable to those concerned with the politics. Because if you think about it, the top marketing companies use the same concepts, the only difference is in whether or not they have sold the community on it.

Ethics is a whole 'nother topic that's smudged between both camps, where one side pretends to care.

You can do both! Build a high quality PBN with contextual links to your money site and 301 a niche relevant domain to your money site too!

301 to your money site would NOT pass any link juice.. the only benefit would be that you might get some traffic from the links but not from Google rankings. The 301 wouldn't have worked even in the good days before the black and white animals started shooting webmasters.. It is just too obvious and very very black hat. So yes, you have to go the long way...
This is not true at all. 301's don't work like they used to, but they 100% used to pass all link juice.

It's difficult to say something like "this is not true at all" since all our experience is limited to a few projects and maybe some A/B tests if we were interested in doing them.

I have domains I spammed the shit out of them and they rank on top 3 for 6 months now while others with same pattern were banned after 10 days.
I have domains which are in top 3 with 1 or multiple 301 for 3 months+ while others got banned after 2 weeks
I have domains which rank high with some PBN and with links from the same PBN others don't rank

Of course there are many other aspects to take into consideration but my point is: Until you test, you never know because ( from my experience) some niches are never visited by human hand and you will do just fine with the SEO you used to make in 2007 + some small changes :)

301 work just fine, i've worked with 800+ of them.

But What most people miss is

- 301s are NOT replacements for normal links. You will still need links to rank.
- If you dont make "good backlinks" to your 301s, ofcourse they wont wont in few months they'll be dead, like any site. simple as that.
- also if u buy crappy domains and 301 them, they wont work. Most ppl get stuck with pa,da,pr,tf,cf while buying domains and dont look beyond that. While the fact is, all these stats can be easily manipulated using spam.

This is not true at all. 301's don't work like they used to, but they 100% used to pass all link juice.

I feel like that's the case for 90% of people here. We all have things that work that don't work, but very few people have actually done the massive amount of testing or have the experience to say everything that works or that doesn't.

The simple solution to that is to just keep trying.

Right now I'm settling on setting up a PBN, I'll 301 1 domain to each site in the PBN (if there's a good relevant domain to 301), and I'll add the PBN links at a pace of 1 per week. The site already has 17k naturally accrued backlinks so this velocity shouldn't cause any problems. And I guess we'll see what happens.

First a major on page overhaul is needed though, since that's just as important.

Or better, we should create a group of maximum 5 people who are interested to test & share the results with the other so in a few months we will know exactly what works and what doesn't. I've added you on Skype :)

I'm pretty sure they already do this in Jr. Vip, but you have to keep in mind just because something worked in the past doesn't mean it will work in the future. Look at blog comments and article marketing. People already know what works, the only tests that need to be done are refining the methods that work to make them as efficient as possible.

Private Blog Networks are the "bees knees" right now. There's one thing I don't understand though, why does everyone recommend you never make multiple links from one of your private blogs? It's always just one link to one money site on each private blog. If you're going to do that, and you're buying high PR domains with a previous backlink profile, why don't you just 301 redirect the domain to your money site?

It just seems to make a lot more sense, if something goes wrong simply remove the 301 redirect. You can also make 301 redirects to any specific page on your site. Why do all of the painful, extra work of setting up a PBN when you can just buy and redirect domains. Is there something I'm missing here? Or does everyone use their private blog network differently, more than one link to a money site per private blog?

If I have a money site and buy 5 expired domains that have good value (a clean, niche relevant backlink profile), why would I build a private blog network rather than just 301ing these domains?

You made a good question and the answer is this:
Yes, you can 301 all the domains to your money site but at end you have for example 10x 301 domains pointing to you
With a PBN you can get 10x quality backlinks not for only 1 money site but for others too. It is a your choice.
