I've noticed this too. In my experience, crawl rate improves more with fresh content, clean site structure, and consistent updates than with backlink volume alone.
Smaller sites that update regularly and keep strong topical focus often get crawled more because Google expects change and sees real user activity. Backlinks still matter, but crawl demand seems more behavior and content-driven than link-count driven.
