Why not just link directly to your site?

I've been reading a lot about creating and back linking various blogs/sites that link to your main site, but don't understand why you can't just directly link to your site. What's the logic behind this?

Well, they believe this:
If you simply link your blogs/sites to your main site, then who is linking those primary/former links in the first place?

So it doesn't have "much value" if there are no backlinks pointing to your backlinks.
 
Not to mention if you flood a new domain with a ton of backlinks you risk getting sandboxed by the big G... Multi level backlinks look like a more natural backlinking structure
 
I can tell you this much from experience.

Our competitor beats us for almost every keyword.

Our site has around 10K direct backlinks - Theirs have around 3K
Our site is about 5 years older

The only difference I can see now is that their 3K links are all linkwheels or Pyramids and ours are direct. Other than that their isnt a whole lot of difference.

Now that I've learned to spot these and seen the difference, I'm pretty convinced they make a big difference. We'll see in the next few weeks/months.
 
This tier concept is really interesting. Having a site directly link to your site would seem more important than a funneled link from another.

marc, are you sure it's not due to their 3k backlinks having more unique ip's?

Very interesting... as I was just reading up on this with unique ip's... though I don't have any experience to back this up. Would like to hear more about this from marc3777 as well.

No because a) we more or less have the same ones squidoo, ezine etc b) we actually crush them in that area too (according to opensiteexplorer)

I'm pretty convinced its the linking structure. We've been competing for years now and could never find a single difference until I learned about linkwheels on BHW.

Now its pretty clear

Thanks for the update marc... what linkwheel do you feel works the best?
 
Thanks Marc. I think I'll use article marketing robot instead of creating free blogs and then blast those articles for link juice.
 
Building an infrastructure of backlinks to the backlinks that are pointing to your site will give those links more link juice. The more powerful the link juice, the more G and the other search engines will think that your site is an authority site and thus put you higer up in the serps.
 
This might be weird, but i also think that the more time visitors spend on your site, the more your site gets ranked. I noticed that on some of my sites. Could be completely wrong though...
 
Well, you can still Xrumer blast the hell out of your site and still rank well. I think this method has been proven well enough. Am I right?

The value of pages linking to pages linking to pages is the foundation of the google search engine. The original google algorithms were created to allow a search engine to determine relevance based on all that linking. The PR number everyone was so concerned about for many years may not be as important as it once was, but the Page Rank concept is certainly still a part of the current algorithms.

If you want to understand why a tier structure can be more valuable than having only direct links then you should do a search for Page Rank algorithm and read a little about it. There's a pretty good article on wikipedia that's worth reading, as well as many other websites and blogs that give it further discussion.

You can also look up one of my threads "SEO - Understanding the Simulation" which gives a pretty easy to understand explanation of why tiers of linking can help your page do better in the SERPs.
 
seems to be all about understanding how the link juice is passed...and keeping under the radar.
