Why most EDU backlinks have 403-404 errors?

Hi everyone,

I have been seeing lately a lot of comment/profile backlinks from Edu/Gov websites which point to my competitors' websites. But those links when accessed in browsers, they show 403,404 or some other internal-server errors.

Attached below is an example of 1 such link:

I wanted to ask: How these backlinks are being created if the webpage is not live and are these links valuable to have an effect on rankings?

I found most of these sites ranking well in SERPs.

I have noticed the same thing across many niches so I believe it is not something exceptional.

Could be due to multiple reasons, but the most common nowadays is the region restriction (due to the GPRD EU law, a lot of sites outside EU have preferred to limit their access inside EU with a 403)

404 could just be a broken link that has not been updated yet by Ahrefs, when updated, it will disappear from their profile link.

403 error is generally caused wnen a server does not allow any particular page to be loaded.
Error 404 is a client side error. In simple words that the web page does not exist with the entered URL.

Don't discount that people in the university spotted the spam and deleted the webpage too. 404 error simply means the page doesn't exists whilst 403 is a user permissions error - could still mean the page is deleted or blocked from access.

404 means the page does not exit or can't found page.
403 error means you are not authorized to view the web page which you are attempting to load.

Very often the pages simply doesn't exist anymore - webmasters delete them because are spam infested.

403: Your access for specific page has been denied maybe because of IP or server.
404: Requested page is currently not available or deleted by webmaster, because the page is no more needed.

This is because all edu website keep verifying the spam happening in their domain and they delete it. For example when i placed order for 100 edu profile link 5 months back, all were live at the time of delivery but when i checked after 2 month, most of them had 404 error only 47 out of 100 was live. again when i checked after a month, it was just 27 live
