That's the conspiracy theory. Which may actually be true. If every website begins paying for ads, what then are the incentives to create quality content for searchers? None.

I think the foundation of this problem is shareholders wanting more profit and growth.
I mean there's nothing wrong with a company consistently making $10b every year, but if that figure doesn't increase, shareholders value of share would not increase nor would their profit. So, executives get pushed to do more. This is a problem across all publicly listed companies.
