Why I find University pointless....

Most are brainwashed to believe College and a Degree are some sort of necessity. Quite sad, really.

I worked in job which I learned by studying and earned 1,300€ / month (not much in Germany) and no fun. Now I work in in a job as lateral entrant, earn the double amount and have fun. College degrees are good if your ego needs a refreshing shower, but instead you also just could buy yourself some intellectual looking glasses.

My son graduated last Wednesday with a degree in sport science and physcology and now works for West Ham United as number 2 performance analyist and is part of the first team setup. He travels with the first team and its a dream job. So for him Uni was well worth it.

i agree with you, completely pointless. I'm lucky it's just
1000$/year in my country

I dropped out of college in my first year. I now am a consultant for Corporate America and I school people that went to university on what to do with projects.

They went to school ---> I get paid to show them how its done.

Do you see something wrong here?

If I were to walk in off the street and ask for a job they would turn me down. Just remember that your approach has to be different if you dont go to college. It's for the best anyways. You know how many people lose their jobs each year? Those are college educated people also!

Work for yourself and set yourself up to succeed.

the thing is i viewed uni as a CV booster for my career and not for learning for my chossen field.

i was very lucky to get sponsored by my company on day release(full uni course but done in one day 12-14 hours without allot of the non essentials cut out and and requires alot of work in your own time)
still get the same qualifications.

the bonus of above is no fees and still get experience at work.

like i said cv booster and just a handy thing to have, having done what i have for 12 years never ever do i use the theory. At the time of doing the degree the practical stuff was very basic and i had covered it years before at work.

I'm in a similar position, studying Network Computing though so I at least I'm learning something on the Cisco modules.

If the work is piss easy then just get it done, you have no reason not to get a top grade. Look at it as an easy ride through a time of your life that's just plain fun.. the social side and so on.

Plus as has already been said, there is no harm whatsoever in learning this stuff from the ground up. It's all just ensuring you have a solid foundation of education across the broader subject, rather than just the specific areas you're interested in like PHP.

Just enjoy uni.

Just knuckle down and learn what you can. You'll be surprised when things come in handy.

I wish I had gone uni...

...sob sob sob:)

Edit:

To quote others who say, knowlegde is good, u never know it can come handy = they are still in the rat race, and living someone elses life.

Here is the key:

If learning leads to knowlegde = You are a fool and useless shit.

If learning leads to action => magic happens.

Idea is to develop yourself so well, that YOU know what u need, and learn it instnatly. That you know what u don't know and learn it instantly.

The ability to know what u don't know. Why should u fill your head about, digital media or adobe director and all that shit?

If you don't repeat it, u don't master it, u don't master it u slowly start to forget = useless knowlegde.

Knowlegde is not power, if it's not defined in action.

So the only good thing our friend here learns from university is : HOW TO WASTE 7.5K !!!!

He will learn that COST and Value are different things. He payes 7.5k and gets value of less. (thats why he posts here).

I bought Think and grow rich for 2 dollars, hardcover, 'that book is worth for me over 200k".

So a knowlegde is only usefull if it's in a form of action and it comes from desire of that person.

We don't live long to 'think we are going tot he right direction" to think someday i will need this knowlegde, to hope someday it will came handy.

That mentality is a middleclass mentality : BHW mentality : I don't even have time TO go whitehat! And u want to waste your time into knowlegde that can come handy someday? lol

University is not useless if you want to become a 9-5 guy. If you want job security. What u learn there is to be a good 'follower", not a good student.

Myself i was studing the highest degree that u could get in economic and business (econimic engineering) (in europe)

I wasted 2 years of my life, then i found out the reason i was studing was '?'. I didn't know why i was studing, we all are programmed.

Then indeed, i found out that If you learn what u love, u can learn that in 1 month what they learn in 12 months.

Why should i waste my time to get a degree? a degree is to get me a job? and i wanted to build assets?

So i said, fuck it, quit university, after couple of days, lost my gf because of it, and ofcourse parrents got disapointed in me ect...the list goes on.

1 year, i didn't left my room. 18hours a day, i was in my room, i bought my self a 3k hardcore pc, lool (not for gaming) but i felt i will need it.

So 'i don't know how' but i found the book think and grow rich, and after that i started reading tons of books ,took notes, downloaded seminars,

EDIT: I remembered how i fiound, think and grow rich : I researched a list of 5k millionairs and billionair,s and started studing and reading their biography, and one of them was talking about that book. I left pc on, took my car (when i had it) (it was my last days with my car lol) and i went to bookstore to buy it, they didn't have it, so i went to secondhand store, there i saw it, when i took it in my hands, 'i felt something special".

I was so curious, that i have read the first 100 pages in the store. Then i payed 2 dollars (about 1.5 euro) and went home. Didn't do anything else but reading it.

And once i finished that book, i remember and said, Who can be so stupid to sell this book ? I was like wth?? How can u sell this ? I Still don't understand. Nowdays when i see it in the stores, i still think, WTF.

If there is someonehere who sold that book, shoot your self lol

I studied wealth. After i understood and felt the fire in me, i started reading 'technical books" like seo, (webdesign i could do it from 14) (i was selling vbulletin themes on talkfreelance back then lol) i was making 400 dollars a month. (i would take a existent vbulletin theme, totally redesign it, and sell it, (after changing totally the code).

When i look back, i never regreted.

In Scarface, tony montana said 'u all are suckers, pussies, 'u need balls to make your dreams come true" (back then i was in university).

And i tought, fuck i'm a fucking douchebag, (altough i was an aggresieve guy, i could beat anyone, i was eveolved in alot of street fights, and my father was also a figter...(and engineer= all he says is ur useless, get a degree lol).

so for the first time in my life i felt like a sissi girl, like all the muscles didnt represent anything, i was winning at fighting, but i was losing at living. Next day , i called univeristy i stoped my subscirption. lost the money, i said to my self, 'the money i lost represents nothing to what i'm going to do. I'm going to do magic, and thats what happend, after 8 months, i got that money back.

So the thing is, u really have to know what u want? some people dream to be a laywer, then yes u need a degree..

but in webdesign, 'coman, how stupid to be a designer, and go to work for someone?

Degree is only NEEDED if you want to a JOB. If u want wealth, the sooner u leave university the sooner u will get what u want.

Also, People who claim that university gave them an ordered mind, and dicipline = they all lie to them self.

Real dicipline and order, comes from inside. Nothing form outside can give u more then u can get from inside.

University made u a slafe of not thinking and dreaming , university made u 'focus on something u don't even dream about.

To me everyone diserves to make their dreams come true, u have to charish dreams.

If you don' t live your dreams, u live someone elses life.

So to the op:D , If you are in the IM and u dont want a job , THEN the sooner u quit the sooner u will become a happy person.

First year i passed my exams well, in the 16/20) Second year i only particpated 2-3 exams.

None of them i passed not because it was hard, but because u cant study it as your mind desires something else.

It's like u love someone and u marry to someone else, and people keep telling u , yeah keep fucking her, it's temperory. lool

The only place that people would understand me is here, in my real life, people think i'm a drug dealer. lol

and more POINLTESS digital media, plus learning Adode Director (who ever uses that..)

I used Director every day of my life... 13 years ago when it was Macromedia :D

I was very happy to use it so much at such an early age and it is basically what evolved into what Shockwave/Flash is today.

I can see both sides of your argument, it really does depend on how people learn. I have had friends at the local college graduating 4years with a BA in arts who have taken many classes on photoshop, and they are nowhere near my skill level now. Goes for many things, the best javascript and PHP developers I know have not had a single day of University...

colleges, universities are worth it, depends on what you study and how you use those resources, i dont know about europe but in usa where ever you go for a coding job they want to see a computer science degree or something equal, but for web design alone i think the practical experience beats them all , i never seen them here have C# on their list tough, and i think CSS is more relevant to web design before php comes in in my opinion.

Fuggs, it's funny, your story with photoshop. All people i know, they are not even CLOSE to my skills of photoshop. I learned all from online tuts.

It's because we learned by experience, and they leanred by "doing basic shit".

It's hard to teach someone an ART, but a real artist teaches himself.

So yes, university people = are avarage joe

Real 'Designers, Engeineers, Millioniars' are SELF MADE.

It's fun to know i was not the only one who tought about it lol

Read your Topic = U said, Wherever u go for a CODING JOB. Yes if u want a job degree is a must. But as we are all here at BHW, means we want everything but a job no? :p

In europe is the same buddy, if u want a job to clean toilets, they ask u a degree, i sitll quesiton my self, where do hookers get their degree?

lol

A university education is a lot like life, you have a beginning and end with the rest well just being filler. It's the journey that counts not the destination.

because you think university is for those looking to get a good paying job. While I see it as a good opportunity to improve my business.
