Those that succeed use their brains and develop their game.

That is right. In Google's eyes, ANY type of backlinking is bad.

Look how many times Matt went around and told webmasters what was "acceptable" for building links. Then, turn around 6 months later and target those exact types of links.

I am waiting for an update that targets an unnatural ratio of do follow links. They will, it's a matter of when.
