Plato, Socrates, Aristotle...all of these embodied the true spirit of learning...a lust for truth and knowledge, not just about a particular subject, but about the great ideas (truth, morality, justice, leadership, etc). Find a professor with that passion, who won't let you get away with turning in a half-brained paper or who cares enough to challenge your most deeply-held assumptions and, my friend, you'll receive more than the cost of your tuition.

On the other hand, if you are unfortunate enough to take classes with dullards who have been phoning it in for a decade, then yes, uni is a waste of time (assuming that you can make something out of your self-study).

A mere PhD isn't a terminal station in an academic field. On the contrary, it 's an entry level title.

Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.

I never regret that I went to school. I made a lot of solid friends and experiences that money can't buy :).

Not sure I understand you point. A PhD is considered a terminal degree. What is a terminal station?
 
Someone can be both a true academic and love money, why limit yourself to either having lots of money or having a PhD. Just like why limit yourself to having a good family life or money, when you can have both in either situations.

A terminal degree for those who don't get to be in academia. An entry point for those who go for an academic career. You can't get any position without it but having it does not suffice to get any position, a "necessary but not sufficient condition".
 
You only have to look at the average earnings from each side to know education has a value

I'm putting myself through a degree in product design, a learn at home sort of thing.

I'm doing it because i want a job in that field. i want to see shit i built on the shelves of the local stores, what a buzz that must be...

but can you do that without learning engineering and stuff? nope, can i teach myself? yeah! no problem. Is it easier to learn from teachers and professionals with experience? fuck yes

Some people can't sit down and learn shit, it does not make them stupid its just how their head works.

And its all well and good pointing out Zuckerburg, jobs and gates but all 3 were drop outs, they still went to college for a while. They saw value in spending time there.

People on here love to use them as examples why college is "bad" but they already had a plan setup,which I doubt the majority of people on BHW have.

If the guy wants to become an engineer, doctor or lawyer GO TO SCHOOL
If you want to do something else - do what ever you love and what ever you think is the right solution

Live your life in such a way you will not regret dying

School and college are an EXCELLENT place to LEARN new things, but it sucks at teaching people how to make money. Because of scientists who mostly graduated from school and college, we have all these great inventions and technology which make life easier. So yes, I'd say the main difference between schooling and internet marketing would be that schools teach you how to OFFER value whilst internet marketing teaches you how to fill up your wallets. Due to this reason, not everybody can be internet marketers.

Please don't tell me you're going to college for the sole purpose of learning.

The experience, connections (if you go to something half decent) and the piece of paper you get when you graduate is where it's at.

Because of your lack of understanding in the OP, I think you're the type of person that should go to college.
