Actually you are both right; the long and the short game is the way to approach a business if you are just getting the ball going.

Gary V is not new in the IM game; how he approaches things is his deal.

Guys that have a small or a new business should be doing both in order to generate revenue to put food on the table today and building a following/client infrastructure/email or contact list for the long term so that they have something to build on for years.

Marketing yourself on Medium for a long term goal is fine; doing other things to get immediate sales is also fine.

Do both (if that is how you build a content business) if you want to have a nice business in X amount of years as well as eat today.

Saying that he’s not looking for a million subs doesn’t imply that he’s not aiming at 900,000.

At the same time he’s also subconsciously priming you with this statement.

Saying that he’s not looking for a million subs is another way to convince you, and everyone else for that matter, that he’s not looking for the “average joe”. And somehow we’re always convinced that everyone else is “average” except ourselves.

And throwing around big numbers is always relative and needs to be viewed in context.

At the present moment around 3,75 billion people are online, and around 1,8 billion log in to YT on a monthly basis.

When you keep that in mind, that 1 million all of a sudden comes down to an average conversion rate*

*I.e Google ads. Mobile (52.2% of all web traffic), across all industries, search network: 3.74%, Display network: 0.72%
