Hey everyone,

I recently started posting on Instagram and I am a bit confused about how the algorithm works.

Some of my posts get decent views, while others barely get any reach, even though the content feels similar.

I am not sure if it is about timing, content type, or something else I am missing.

For those who have grown accounts, what made the biggest difference for you in the beginning?

From real experience, these matter most:
  • Hook in the first 1–2 seconds (especially for Reels)
  • Consistency in one niche (don’t mix too many topics)
  • Saves & shares > likes (these boost reach a lot)
  • Posting when your audience is active (timing still helps, but less than content)

posts that spark interaction perform better: strong captions that invite replies, content people want to save or share, relatable or emotional content
Low engagement = low reach.

First engagement decides everything. If people dont react fast it stops getting pushed. Hook and timing matter more than the content itself early on.

Even similar content can perform very differently because each post gets tested separately at the start. For me, the biggest difference early on was improving the hook and first few seconds. If people stop and watch, reach goes up fast. Timing helps a bit, but retention and how people interact with the post matter way more than anything else

In the early stages of Instagram, the biggest difference comes from how your content is "tested," not from posting incorrectly.

The algorithm typically distributes posts to a small group first. If a video has a good hook in the first 3 seconds and keeps viewers engaged (high watch time), it will be pushed further; otherwise, it will have almost no reach. Therefore, the most important factor is a captivating opening and short, easy-to-rewatch content.

Additionally, choosing a clear niche is crucial. When you post consistent content, Instagram understands who you're targeting and distributes it to the right audience. Initial engagement rates (likes, early comments) also significantly impact your reach.

Finally, prioritize Reels and post consistently. Don't judge by the results of just one or two posts; look at the results after 10-20 posts because the algorithm always has a fairly random "testing" element.

Are you using hashtags correctly? Because in my opinion it seems to be a hashtag problem and the algorithm is having a hard time understanding your content.

So if i bot up saves and share my reel will trend?

This also depends on the content you are uploading. In the case you are uploading content that is NSFW, then Instagram might not promote it as much. Check in the settings, under "account status" and see if there is any violation. If there is, just remove that post and the account should be good.

The first few seconds determine whether viewers will stop—the timing of posting is important, but retaining and engaging viewers is what ultimately determines effectiveness.

The algorithm starts by showing your content to a small group of your most active followers. If they engage well (reshare, comment, watch time), it's shown to more of your followers. If engagement continues, you hit the Explore page for non-followers.

Your existing followers are the gatekeepers to the Explore page. If they don't engage, you're dead.

What really matters is: what are the people who are successful in your niche doing? Check your competitors' strategy and replicate what's proven to work for them. Photos, Reels, carousels… each niche reacts differently.

Stop trying to guess the right format. Find content that's already getting massive engagement in your space and model the core elements: the hook, format, even the same sounds if it's Reels. Don't reinvent the wheel when you can copy what already works
