Why do so many people still mass-botspam comments?

I've wondered this for a while. Sites get so many spam comments that are clearly bot doing mass submissions. Even if these comments make it through and get approved, I don't think they serve any SEO value at all as contextually they are always irrelevant and weak:, such as "I saw your site and love your content, thanks".

I understand comment author links worked 15 years ago. But why do people waste their time still doing this type of thing?

For niche related traffic! If they have blog probably they have visitors and some read comments.
Not everything is about SEO, sometimes it's about converting or traffic!

Such kind of traffic will not even convert good.

Also getting a ton of those, even pingbacks. Certainly I've never approved a single one.

I think there is no SEO benefit, but some people are just lazy and still hope bots can do the work for them... Or selling such services on sites like Fiverrr to buyers who have no idea of SEO.

I doubt any genuine visitor goes on an article and then clicks on the author name link of a random comment that adds no value. So if that's the reason for spamming, I think they're just wasting their time in really bad way :/

They most likely won't rank a money site, but there are still plenty of uses.

They'll get your tier 2 and tier 3 links indexed. You can use them to diversify anchor text. They can also be used to hide more powerful links.

I use them to index T2/T3 links. Other than that I wouldn't touch them anymore, not worth the effort and won't bring noticeable quality traffic

"Comment author links" do still work. I did a smaller case study here:

Of course they only work if they are done right. You spam, you don't rank, it's as easy as that. However, if you take the comment game serious, you will also see serious results.
Good content, good replies on good blogs => good results.

I believe that can be good enough to help to index.
At least, Google will have the chance to notice your link even if it's nofollow.

Curious about your software. Didn't know that there are English blogs which aren't Scrapeboxed to death.

I wouldn't bother with more than ~20 HQ blog comment links per site though, after that I didn't notice any effect, at least for German sites.

There actually are a lot of blogs which aren't scrapeboxed to death, to be honest I am starting to see much more clean blogs then spammed blogs, but I got no statistics on that.

To be honest, in my experience, there isn't a limit to those blog comments, however I generally get around 5-20 per page, depending on the importance, links structure,.... But I spread everything out to keep it natural. (Not sure if you meant 20 per website, or 20 per page.)
Did a smaller case study with my project for a german site, but since my AI is trained for english, it didn't work out as great and the content wasn't that superb, but it still kind of did the job, however not nearly as good as the english version, but yeah. Actually have a smaller idea on how I could easily switch my program to support several languages, but I'll have to see if its worth the time.

I have tested commenting manually for multiple domains and in my experience there wasn't a ranking difference between 20 and 50 comments, that's why I cap it at 20. Might be different for google.com compared to my tests regarding google.de, the German market has some odds for sure.

I usually go good above that number, but over a longer timeframe, different subpages, topics,...
I guess if you spread it out it doesn't hurt, however I generally aim to not go over ~20 comments per page at once. But yeah right now I can only speak for the english market, germany is def something else.
