I've wondered this for a while. Sites get so many spam comments that are clearly bot doing mass submissions. Even if these comments make it through and get approved, I don't think they serve any SEO value at all as contextually they are always irrelevant and weak:, such as "I saw your site and love your content, thanks".
I understand comment author links worked 15 years ago. But why do people waste their time still doing this type of thing?
