It's a simple case of there will always be a statistical percentage of a large population that is stupid. Add the lack of education in many cases and access to the internet and you get people believing that the earth is flat.

It's a method someone developed to desensitize the population and make them believe anything.
If you plant enough absurd fake news, people begin to believe anything.
Right now people believe the virus is good for immunity and vaccines are not. To name just one absurd case. There are several others. Flat earth, conspiracies involving everything and so on.
What's impressive is, once the person goes down this rabbit hole, they seem unable to get back out. No matter how much you try to show them the facts, they come back with fake news sites showing factoids and they believe them.
The flat earth phenomenon will be studied for decades just like other historic periods were.
Fake news has generated a legion of crazies who will believe anything.

Lack of interest into investigation, paranoia, a huge anti-government position (more like anti believing in anything the government says), poor education... every one has their own reasons to believe in stuff. Some of them just believe it because their parents said it to them only.
