If I remember correctly, it used to be called Angela's method.
I understand it's only natural to have some profile links.... social media, business directories like crunchbase, etc but those are natural.
Why do people still build them if no search engine cares about them since like 2010?

Dunno; I use them as part of „foundation“ links after launching a new local leadgen project.

It won't do any harm, and besides citations it certainly won't be bad for distributing NAP.

Paul and Angela got together as they both did that.

Angela was the sweetest lady on the planet but her methodology to rank has sailed into the sunset and those links are not even good for camouflage links.

Mainly to snatch them up for branding purposes, so no one else claims the property

Although the basic foundation backlinks like web 2.o, bookmarks, web profile, online sharing have all lost their value over recent years.
But, there's still a big market with HUGE demand for cheapest links that buyers assume can still rank them to the top.
So to fulfill the demands there's also supply.
People still believe that foundation links can do wonders and they can rank and bank by spending less.

Because Google still index those links, and it will reflect in aherfs.

A link a link simple.
Even if it useless lol
Ah, the circular argument, a link is a link is a link is a link....
To be honest with you it depends, if you got a company, startup, agency website, profile links from crunch base, product hunt etc will help you build your brand.

One should harness every opportunity to get visibility in as much it does not hurt one's business.

People want free links and profile links are one of the easiest free links one can get. They also forget that backlinks is not just the number of backlinks.

Even though it doesn't have much value like other link, it's helps to diversify backlink profile and legit(when you do it right)
