Why do people do this?

If the page already has 15 links on it and you add 1 more, then you are getting 1/16 of the link juice from that page to your site. If you add 15 links on the page (all to different pages of your own, preferably on different domains), then all of a sudden you are sucking off 15/30 (ie. 50%) of the link juice from that page. The link juice going to each of your own pages is slightly less, but overall you are sucking out more link juice into your own network. You are also getting added anchor text juice by having more links going to your pages with good anchor text.

Obviously this doesn't work in every situation where you are limited in the number of links you can get, and if you go overboard with the link stuffing you're just going to make it look spammy.

I place 3 on average on a single page, is this bad? (to different parts of the site)
