Why do my peers have so many external links?

I checked out my competitors' websites, and they have thousands of backlinks. However, very few of their backlinks are actually blog backlinks or niche backlinks. I'm wondering if I should also go crazy and buy some mixed backlinks, such as web bookmarks, blog comments, and other low-quality backlinks, in order to quickly increase my website's authority.

Please give me some advice.

No one buys thousands of backlinks, they are created with software/tool gsa ser, scrapebox, moneyrobot. Don't create those link directly to your site it may tank your site for good. Buy quality links, Google favors quality over quantity.

I understand that I may have been too impatient. I wanted my weighting to rise quickly so that my keywords would jump to the top of the rankings and attract traffic.

Pbn, Wikipedia and guest post link works, but no one will give you ranking and traffic guarantees.
 
I Experienced something like this - One of my new clients had a lot of spam backlinks. Auto Generated one's. I had to disavow around 400 out of 500ish. Then Started work from scratch. But after 2-3 months website started going down in rankings. I checked the backlinks and many of them were lost. So I made a guess that those spam backlinks played a part in the rankings too.
Even if they are spam and auto generated, you can never be sure if they are harmful (my case was a low competitive niche)

I wouldn’t go all in on cheap backlinks. They can give a quick boost, but they also carry a real risk of hurting your site long term. Focus on building fewer but higher quality links in your niche—it’s slower, but way safer and more sustainable.
 
Forum comment backlinks may be also great, but not ones bought in bulk, it's better focus on making threads on platforms like here on BHW
And definitely quality > quantity, you don't need several hundreds of backlinks, it's better to focus on niche-related ones

Buying lots of low-quality backlinks can give a short-term boost but often backfires with penalties. Focus on fewer, relevant, high-quality links in your niche—it’s slower but safer and more sustainable.

Don’t try to out spam your competitors. Mix in some safe, diverse links, but put your budget and energy into quality contextual backlinks that actually pass trust.
