Why cant I rank #1 with these stats?

Google says that they do not consider bounce rate, and there seems to be lots of evidence to suggest that this is true. I would be interested to see if anyone's had any direct experience contrary to what this article says:

The main thing is that however they judge a site, Google is good as determining quality sites. They generally return relevant results. It seems that every year, fewer and fewer poor, but well optimized, sites appear high in the search results.
I suspect this trend will continue as they improve what they do.

Jeffern - Great article!
Perhaps bounce rate is not the best specific example as it meets my example of being easily manufactured. I should probably have stuck with building a quality site is good for SEO.

if you are using wordpress, use the external nofollow plugin. this will help you for seo and make it so your site doesnt just keep boosting the amazon page.
make sure you have your keyword in the h1, h2, h3 tags, make sure its in the description and in the url, try to have the keyword underlined, bolded, and italicised in your post and be sure to go to your footer and add your keyword as anchor text that points to your money page to give yourself better internal seo.
as for backlinks, you will want to get high quality links coming in so google sees you as a prominent and authoritative figure for that niche (which is the reason you are on the 2nd page.... amazon, target, etc all have worse SEO but they are respected and authoritative). i recommend writing articles on big article sites, creating a spinnable article and submitting it to several web 2.0 websites. once you get onto the first page (or even right now as you are already in spot 11) you should write a press release a week and submit it to popular free press release sites. you will get the high authority backlink from the PR site and also scraper sites syndicated sites will republish your article and link giving you tons of free backlinks a week (some being from strong sites).
mostly its about consistency and patience. just do what i said above and be patient. in a month i dont see any reason why you can't be number 1

How can bounce rate be a factor if you could make competitors look irrelevant for any given phrase ?

Thanks for all the great information guys. I am using wordpress so the no follow plugin just makes my amazon aff. links no follow thius not helping my competition any?
Where do you edit the h1, h2, h3 tages at in wordpress? Right now I am using All in one SEO plugin and just putting my keywords into that section. Anything else I need to do?

nofollow will help you retain your linkjuice and if you happen to be competing against the amazon product, nofollow will help boost you while keeping amazon where it is.
to edit h1, h2, h3 tags in wordpress, go to HTML editor and put your title like this:

I am having a hard time with what has been said in this thread. If you want to overcome the sites that rank above you for competitive keywords, you are going to have to:
1) Find out what links these sites have to them
2) Get those links
Just because Yahoo/SEO Quake says the competitors have N links, doesn't mean it is really true. You need some other form of analysis that is more accurate like Majestic SEO or equivalent services. Lewi is also offering such a service in this thread. Yahoo can understate actual backlinks by 95%.
Once you know what backlinks you need, you need to assess the feasibility of getting them or finding an equivalent. Using crazyflx's method, Scrapebox can be a useful tool but it is based on Yahoo's results like most everything, so you may have to do more work than what Scrapebox would indicate. Sometimes the only way is to bring out SENuke or xrumer and go for broke, and you may have to create many thousands of links to overcome the competition. Don't do it all in one day--keep building slowly over time.
The other technique is to build your own well constructed link pyramids or use ones created by others for a fee. *Candi* can make some nice ones for you.
