Having backlinks is important for SEO since it helps you have more traffic on your site. Having backlinks means that other sites find your content valuable enough to link to it, therefore search engines will find your content valuable.

Count 1 backlink = 1 vote to win Google. The more votes (backlinks) you get, the higher chances for you to win top 10 positions. However, the important part is authority and quality in backlinks. The high authority and quality links will count as upvote whereas spammy low quality links will count as downvote and could even penalize your site.

Basically, they give algorithms proof that our site has some quality and that's really valuable and useful for the community. If other reliable sources online accept to cooperate with us in some way, that means that we are doing something well and that it's recognizable outside our audience. With backlinks we increase also our internet visibility, we are present on many sites, forums, blogs, connect with a much wider audience, and have the chance to significantly increase our monthly site traffic. It's not easy to properly do a backlinking process, it requires time and effort, but there isn't a better thing for improving the organic ranking.

Backlinks are like the connections you have with people, the more trustworthy people you have connections with - the more you'll be trusted. if you have connections with shady people, you'll probably be avoided. Backlinks form authoritative sites are better for you as google then trusts you.
