You can still make blog networks but don't count on G for traffic. Don't forget that there's lots of other traffic sources.

I think it would be more cost effective for them to do that then make new updates/algos whatever to find them. I am by no means an expert I am just saying whats on my mind with these blog networks. I really do want to find one that is powerfull yet will not be found.

The truth is I run a network myself which has seen no negative effects through the google updates and if they wanted to pay me just to reveal my network they would need to spend thousands of dollars which I can't imagine would be cost effective for them just to bring Down a discreet network like mine.
Sites like buildmyrank made it so obvious with there network. The mistake they made was allowing to many people in and allowing the competition to see these posts through sites like opensiteexplorer.

highly cost effective - $20-50 for a submission somewhere or paying some pointy head $100+ p/h to find and reverse engineer

How would you reverse engineer a blog network that are in no way connected to each other? The only way possible is if Google themselves purchased links from every single blog? do you know of any other way? Private blog networks are not dead, infact if done right they are the most powerfull link building method out there.
Not so hard.
1. If your links work they should be visible to google. Else they are useless.
2. Buy 1 submission to network. Then see in webmaster tools (or some kind of inside google link explorer tool) the links. Ban the root domains.
Unless you're selling each link individually, but thats hardly a private network.
But I don't think google wood stoop so low.

I understand where your coming from, if you have a private network not visible to public and only you knows about it, there is absolutely nothing google can do about it, only thing you will suffer from is deindex of your blogs.
Not massive penalties handed out to people who uses popular public networks

A good alternative to private blog networks would be some serial guest posting on legit high quality, high traffic, ******** blogs!
30 * 600-700 words articles for guest posting would cost close to ~$210... unless you write them yourself!

As someone that accepts guest posts on multiple blogs I will say that I'm very specific to what I accept. I'll only accept articles that I feel are deserving to be published on my blog. For example if someone thinks that they are just going to write a keyword rich article and publish it on my blog for free then that person is highly mistaken, and if a blog owner did accept articles just for the sake of being unique then more than likely that blog is not worth submitting to, why? Because the quality isn't there, the quality that real visitors think wow I love this blog, or the quality that tells Google wow these blog pages are earning real high quality authoritative links.
Some things I look at when accepting guest posts:
Is the title written in a way that is appealing to potential readers?
Is the language in good English, free flowing, easy to read, informative? Is the content unique, educational, well researched? is it written for potential viewers or is it keyword stuffed?
Are images included? If so is it unique and relevant? Images are preferred as it keeps potential readers on your blog. Nobody wants to read a boring newspaper article full of 100's of words all compacted together, at least not on a blog anyway.
Does the post include bullet points, sub headings, charts, or anything to improve the appeal of the post?
Is the outgoing link trustworthy, relevent, informative?
Is the outgoing link pointing to MFA sites, any other kind of nasty site?
These are all things that someone who accepts guest posts looks for. Guest posting is not frowned upon by legitimate white hat SEO professionals, in fact I regularly accept high quality posts from big brands, and well known SEO companies.
There are many benefits between legitimate guest posting and high quality blog networks. Alot of people don't realise the power of a high quality link because they have never had one. In reality people talk about diversity, nofollow, bla bla bla, but all it takes is a few high quality links to rank a site for a competitive keyword.

Diversity of links, more web 2.0, and definitely a concerted effort to get social signals like facebook likes, shares, tweets, and +1's.
If somebody was smart (and there are a lot of very smart people in this forum), somebody should construct a new service called "Drip Feed Social". I think it is lunacy to buy 50, 100, 500 , 1000 facebook likes or +1's. You might as well send a direct letter to MC and let him know you are doing that. Talk about a sudden footprint.
Seriously, wouldn't be cool to have a way to 'dial in' how much social drip you need. Newer sites would get a lot less, and more established sites could get more. You just pay for credits or something like that, and you adjust the faucet yourself. Heavy drip followed by light drip, and keep it random. You spread it around to inner pages as well - not just the homepage. A person who offered that could make a fortune.

I have a blog that three 3 people contribute, everyday for last 3 weeks, with hand written unique articles. We also did some live events update and have made decent progress just submitting to reddit, hacker news and digg, hitting 1000 average, views a day etc... can any one tell me how to make private blog network or guide me to where to find it, i was searching forum all day, without any luck

I noticed that the zenhabits.net blog has several guest posters and like you mentioned, the quality is top notch!
Content is king, if written for the visitors!
