Why Are Backlinks Important in SEO?

I know. Interesting this Semrush article doesnt mention backlinks
So what are authority sites to you? Come on, even the PageRank algorithm plays a role. You can find mentions of PageRank in the leaked documentation. Just because the article doesn't mention it doesn't mean they don't use it. The approach has changed, but they still use some of the old techniques.

I keep hearing that backlinks are crucial for SEO, but I want to understand exactly why they matter and how much impact they have in 2025.
Backlinks remain important for SEO in 2025 because they signal trust and authority to search engines. Quality backlinks from reputable sites can improve rankings, while low-quality links can harm them.

Have you read my postings in which i explain why it doesnt make sense?

Explain why would Google get involved in this this.

Or do you think Google doesnt know 95% of backlinks is fake?
Or do you think an algo without backlinks is worse?
Good and toxic? OMG. What a BS. Invented by people who do everything to get their backlink selling moneymachines alive.

Maybe i forgot to mention that i dont buy backlinks and dominante every niche i touch. So i know backlinks are totally unimportant and with almost certainty that they are not part of the algo.

Ive written also things about leaks. Might be ineteresting. But in short: leaks are to be ignored because they are internally inconsistent.
Dont you think Google decides what they leak?
And why leak and give clues like John Mueller does and keep the algo secret at the same time?

I already told you, I think it's one part of the algorithm. You are not automatically worse without, because the algorithm works as a whole

Backlinks are crucial in SEO because they signal trust, authority, and relevance to search engines. High-quality links improve rankings, drive referral traffic, and help with indexing. However, quality matters more than quantity—focus on authoritative, niche-relevant links for the best results.

They help improve your website visibility and rankings and enhance domain authority.

He is just missing the point, that backlinks are a subset of the algorithm, yes you can rank without them. With good backlinks you are not worst you are better. It's impossible to prove since the algorithm of Google is not public

When a site mentions you with a link, it works like a contextual recommendation. Google sees this as a sign of trust and authority. The more high-quality, relevant mentions you get, the more visibility you can gain — it’s one of the strongest signals for ranking.
