They matter only on BHW. Its because there is a lot of scammers here trying to get your money.
In real world backlinks dont matter any more for a long time already.
Would be really stupid when Google shows a Chinese restaurant in London when searching for a Pizzeria in Paris because the first bought more fake backlinks on BHW.
Google would trash their business very quickly.
All the hocus pocus about good and toxic and quality etc. is total BS without any proof. Google has far better ways to make SERPS than getting involved in this scam.

I see backlinks as a social status. It shows other entities of the internet that you are relevant in a way. And with that, you get to move up the ranks. I've always seen it as a secret society. Not everyone can or will get it. Backlinks help you get recognized and into circles you wouldn't normally be able to get into. I'm just rambling.
