    Hi all,

This is a little trick I used to get links from all my competitors. I work as a web designer and wanted to rank #1 for some local towns with keywords like "web design in ________" and the such.

Problem was, not many people really want to link to web designers. We don't have much thats interesting and our websites are 100% designed to make you buy our services.

So I needed links, option 1 is to buy links. We all know that, but option 2 was to build links from relevant pages. Who could possible be more relevant than other web designers in the towns I want to rank for.

So I created a website under a fake name, the idea of this website was for me to "interview" other web designers, I post up their interview and give them some advertising on this website.

Out of the 80 emails I sent, 55 got back to me and accepted, I posted up the interviews and of course, these people then tweeted out about the interview, posted it on their websites, blogged about it, tweeted it, facebooked it.... It worked brilliantly.

But the problem was I build links to a different website and not my own, so how do i transfer the link juice to my site?

I used rel cononical, I reposted these interviews to my portfolio website and indexed them all in web master tools. I then used the rel cononical tag to pass the link juice to me. Another option was a 301 but if they checked this in the future they would have seen my plan, but with rel canonical i doubt they will ever know!

Within 14 days I was dominating the SERPs. For many towns I was in the top #3. But for 5 towns I was #1 from this technique alone.

This works better for offline niches and real businesses, hopefully this works well for your businesses or clients. It's a great one for clients because you own the 'bridge' that passes the link juice, if they stop paying you its easy to turn off ;) This did not take more than 2 days to build and implement either, its a great return for such little work.

Hopefully this makes sense to you guys, if you have any questions please do go ahead and answer them.

Can you provide more details on this? I was thinking about using a 301 for this since i don't know how to do it via rel canonical.
What i understand so far, you posted the interviews on your fake site, other webmasters linked to those interviews. Then you copied those interviews to your main website? When does the rel canonical come into play?

And one extra question: did you publish all the interviews in one big post or separate posts for each?

Rel cononical passes all link juice to the post you link to in the tag. It's used to stop duplicate content glitches. It's a simple tag you add to the head of the document. google how to use it if you are unsure. They explain it better than I can.

I post the interviews and the people i interview link to it, you are right.

    I published them separately

I have a question. OP, you noted: " I then used the rel cononical tag to pass the link juice to me."

The rel cononical tag is used to tell the search engines to treat a post on your page as though it were posted by another website. So, you are passing link juice away from your site, not to your site. How is it that you claim you managed to pass link juice from a competator's website, to your website, by using the rel cononical tag?

Thanks OP. I congratulate you on a fine, fine share :)

Of all the 'methods' posted here, this is probably the single most useful one to me.

As far as i know, rel=canonical does not work across websites - it works only on the same domain... so that's how i asked exactly how you used.

Its late and I'm a little confused

    Post interview on interview site

Then mirror interview on "real site" and rel canonical interview site?

so the content on the page you are sending the juice to has to be similar to the content on the page you are sending the juice from, how do you manage that?
