Good afternoon white hatters!

Sometimes noobies have questions that just aren't answered on other threads. So here goes...

Lets just assume for a second that black hat methods are now dead. Pretend with me won't you. Now let's assume that the only way to get backlinks are to:

1. Get the community involved somehow and make your page popular enough to be linked to the natural way.

2. Do all of the backlinking by hand, one by one.

As #1 is pretty much impossible for most most sites the #2 method seems to be the only one viable. My question is this: if one does all the backlinking manually, doesn't google see and record the ip address of the computers leaving the link all around? I've heard that's the case case with things like reviews so google knows if they're actually local reviews.

My natural thought is that idea's ridiculous, but I think google is smarter than we give them credit for. Any thoughts?

No, google does not record ip address' when a user makes a link, they don't have that capability, its not possible...

Also, your assumption that #2 is white hat is false. It doesn't matter how you make links, whether it by hand or bot, both are blackhat...

Number 1 isn't impossible. You just have to have passion for the niche and publish excellent content. Write up a few excellent guest posts, be very active on forums, and become a leader and you'll gain popularity quickly. The criteria is that you have to be seriously passionate and put out excellent content like Glen Allsop of ViperChill. Its obviously easier in a less competitive niche, as doing that in the IM niche is pretty damn hard. However, in a smaller niche its not too hard to gain authority after a year of excellent content creation.

However, considering linkbuilding still works(albeit more stealthy and careful than before Penguin), I think combining number 1 with seo is the best bet for anybody looking to create an authority site.

You really think google can make the difference between a human placed backlink and an automatic one?Google can read just what's on the source page,so you should focus more on that, insteed of worrying a lot about all this updates.

As Matt the Cunt eloquently puts it. What google wants to see is people voting for you not you voting for you. So yes as others have said before manually making backlinks even by hand is against Google's idiotic morality.

Google does not want seo whether its white hat or not, am I right? big stupid G only wants natural people to link to your website.

Its totally right that it doesnt matter how to generate links. Quality matters. If you can do High Quality Links automatically, youre a brilliant Blackhat ;)

Having more content (relevant content, which is different from the content on other sites both in wording and topics) is a real boost for your site's rankings. Whether its black hat or white.
