White Hat link building... Is there such a thing?

I seriously ask, because for what I have gotten from Google, they say "not" to put follow links of your website in a bunch of places..

For what I get is that Google claims that follow links will show up naturally for your site as people "like" it. I call that BS.

So, if Google calls for website owners not to do follow links to your site, then, is there any type of white hat link building then?

I don't think there is any such thing "White Hat Link Building", what exists is White Hat SEO which according to Google mainly depends upon On-Page aspects and quality being delivered to website visitors which may automatically create a buzz on Internet resulting in more links/votes towards your website.

To summarize in one line "Any kind of manual link building for your own website may be considered as black hat SEO" but still all of us keep of building links because it works ;)
 
Here's an excerpt from the Google Webmaster Guidelines that mentions link schemes:
Any links intended to manipulate PageRank or a site's ranking in Google search results may be considered part of a link scheme and a violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines. This includes any behavior that manipulates links to your site or outgoing links from your site.

The following are examples of link schemes which can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results:
  • Buying or selling links that pass PageRank. This includes exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links; exchanging goods or services for links; or sending someone a "free" product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link
  • Excessive link exchanges ("Link to me and I'll link to you") or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking
  • Large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links
  • Using automated programs or services to create links to your site

With this in mind, we can assume that building any do-follow links would be considered a "link scheme" since these links manipulate your site's ranking. However, it would appear that building no-follow links (not spamming) on various websites with the intention of receiving traffic from those inbound links is acceptable.

Before we go any further, let's define the word "scheme". A scheme is defined as, "a large-scale systematic plan or arrangement for attaining some particular object or putting a particular idea into effect". This means that if you have a plan to procure inbound links that directly manipulate your website's ranking, then you are scheming and violating Google's Webmaster Guidelines. If you consider this definition, then even building no-follow inbound links could be considered "black hat" if you are only building them with the intention of receiving do-follow links from other sources.

Now that you know this, my advice to you if you want to avoid link schemes is to build no-follow inbound links with the intention of receiving traffic. However, even if you build these no-follow backlinks with the intention of receiving do-follow links, it's not like Google can tell the difference, so all of these "white hat link building" and "black hat link building" definitions are nonsense in the end.

And we still have hundreds of "White Hat SEO" gurus here. I have many clients that ask me this question : "But the SEO you're going to do is White Hat right?" And I have to explain all the shit to them :D
 
Only on-site SEO is whitehat, if you build a single link on a different domain that is already blackhat
 
Whitehat is basically a bi-word for 'natural progression'. If you create a site and produce content ONLY on-site, anything that is genereated (shares of that page, links to the page, traffic to your site) is all done by others, Google should see this as White Hat in the term they use it.

If you do ANY sort of outside link building that is not normal (example is buy a link service), that is black hat.

White Hat : Work to get it.
Black Hat : Pay to get it.
 
The answer is a big fat NO. Anybody who uses the words white hat and links in the same sentence is probably trying to sell you something. I see the term white hat falling out of favor eventually, as it is a highly overused term. 99% of what is discussed on the white hat sub-forum is NOT white hat in fact.

Quick guide:

White hat = Doing nothing off-site

Black hat = Becoming successful by beating those just doing white hat.

End of story.
 
Googles rules is very tricky and iffy. The minute you "build" a link to your site. That's already blackhat according to the rules. Everything can be considered "greyhat"
 
There is no thing like White hat seo, According to Google getting links to rank a site is blackhat.
 
there is no such thing as white hat seo, and in particular there is no such thing as white hat link building its a total tautology like saying happily sad because the notion of what link building aims to achieve is exactly the same as the definition of black hat seo.
 
good question heh.. I guess it does not exist but you have to live with that
 
I don't understand this thread... How can one consider link building to be black hat? Posting your site in the correct places such as forums as a form of advertising it is not black hat. If you enter you site in a directory exclusively made for people in your niche, how is that blackhat? I think black hat is only placing links where they don't belong, such as comments on other blogs for the sake of getting your link out on it.

That is just my two cents, I could be wrong.
 
Google in theory discourages everyone from manipulating link building. By having this statement in mind I believe that in Google's eyes every link building activity that is started with the initiative of the webmaster is inappropriate. So whitehat or blackhat is the same. SEO in general is "illegal" for Google. Adwords on the other hand should be your only option if you want to make your website known ;) .
 
What I call WhiteHat SEO is proven methods of building links and online presence as safe as currently possible.
According to Google you really shouldn't aim for link building and just let it occur naturally. (Ha Ha Ha)

So yeah if you plan on ranking a site then build links but learn how to go through that process where Google
sees your growth and link portfolio as natural. Remember that SEO is just as much of an art as it is a science!
