White Hat link building... Is there such a thing?

No mate, nothing like whitehat SEO. The moment you build do-follow links, regardless of how you go about it, you are into the blackhat world. This forum had definitely an eye for the future lol.

Focus on relevant and natural SEO when you build up your campaign. If you create all in natural way you will have no problem.

Well, technically if your content is interesting enough it can go viral.

But let's face it, my life insurance comparison website is never going viral. So what you are left with is to make your links look "whitehat" and "natural".

I can't remember who said this after the latest penguin update on here, but it went something like:
"To those with pure blackhat sites, your rankings are gone. To those with pure whitehat sites, you don't have to worry because you weren't ranking anyway."

Yeah, white hat link building is just a myth in my opinion. You either grey or black. As soon as you start looking for a link, you are considered as playing against Google's rules.
