A good way to edit, if you are serious, would be to create the scenes in After Effects with all of the effects, and then put it all together in Vegas. Vegas shows the waveform of the audio right in front of you, so you can easily layer and splice a dozen different audio tracks.

After effects and Adobe Premiere would cover everything but, it's probably and overkill for what you are aksing. If you know some Photoshop it will take you a week to learn after effects with online tutorials.. def worth it

I like Screencast-O-Matic but I don't make anything more than instructional videos so it may not work for those of you that are more creative and gifted.

I use After Effects for editing, and Sony Vegas for acutal production/putting it together.

Sony vegas as a beginners entry to professional quality video.

Sony vegas may seem strange at first, but you'll honestly start to love it once you know how it works.

After you've mastered Sony Vegas, you can consider After effects and Adobe Premier

I do everything in Premiere Pro.
First 2 hours I spend on Youtube watching different tutorials, but once you pass that point - you can apply for video editing jobs.

Sony Vegas or Camtasia. I personally prefer Camtasia out of both, but I didn't mind using Sony Vegas to edit and publish.

Since I have full access to all of adobe programs I stick to premiere and after effects. I tried free version of programs and I really had little luck/not good enough
