I use Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP) and find it does the job.

How's the speed for that?
I heard it gets quite slow/heavy if your site has lots of posts

I never noticed any problems with speed using it, and the plugin you're talking about states it has not been tested in the last three updates https://wordpress.org/plugins/related-posts-by-taxonomy/ "This plugin hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress."

I'd vote for YARPP too. I am using it on every Wordpress site that I run and it's really awesome! A bit of custom CSS applied to this plugin and it will even look awesome

If you're using Jetpack, it comes with related posts functionality that has next to zero effect on website performance.
YARRP has great feedback too, however, it has been reported to have some effect on the performance. I personally have never used it on a live website.
Inline related posts plugin is good too if you're looking for links within the content.
Also, I think you can activate related posts using blocks as well, check in Google.

I have used Yet Another Related Posts Plugin on sites which have thousands of posts, didn't have any problem with the speed.
