Which is better? Blog Comments or Profile Links?

$50 is a steal for XR.
I'd buy it and load it up, even if its a backup for future work when you may need it.
You can tweak XR to be powerful still, but you need to learn how to operate XR properly in order to do so. XR is still effective, but not so much in your traditional forum spam way...

I think blog comments are really better than profile links ..

As far as I can tell profile links are as good as dead. They might work as a tier 2 backlink source but as a tier 1 I would avoid. Blog comments work much better as long as you have a diversified anchor text portfolio and very VERY low OBLs on your comments--I'm talking below 10.

Forum profiles are dead, unless your using them for links pointing to other links. Blog commenting is awesome, no doubt about that. Creating high page rank backlinks pointing to your main site done manually will always give you a huge serp boost. Specially if your links are related to your niche.
