I’ve been testing different content formats on a few blogs — short posts, long articles, list posts, tutorials, etc.

From your experience, which type of content keeps visitors engaged the longest?

Do readers stay more on:


  • Long guides?
  • Step-by-step tutorials?
  • Lists (Top 10, Best tools, etc.)?
  • Or something else?

From my tests, long guides and step-by-step tutorials usually keep users on the page the longest, especially when the content solves a specific problem. Lists (Top 10, Best X, etc.) tend to get high clicks but lower time-on-page because people skim. Deep tutorials and well-structured guides generally provide the best engagement and lowest bounce rate. Every niche behaves differently, though, so testing is still the safest approach.
 
Users are attracted to content that answers their questions.
They want specifics, not just water. I think step-by-step instructions will always be in demand.

Long guides work too if theyre well structured, but lists and short posts get skimmed fast. Engagement comes from clarity and actionable value, not just length.
 
Step by step tutorials. But the steps must be updated to the current version of whatever you are providing guide for.

Long guides. But the topic should be something very important for the reader. That will make him read the full article.
