Which Comes First - Website or Affiliate Relationships

Hi All,

I've got my niche and overall business plan. But when I look at potential affiliates to promote, they ask for a website address, sources of traffic and other assumed established business info.

Do I build and publish the website with all the affiliates I want to promote featured with straight links (non-affiliate links) and then approach them for an affiliate account?

Unless your site is getting traffic, you won't have success either way.
 
Oh yes of course. My question is basically, what's the standard operating procedure for publishing a new affiliate site? What do the people who have successful affiliate website do when launching a new site?
 
You launch your site, which should look good and successful and then you apply to affiliate programs. Is it what you were asking about?

You can apply immediately but if they ask you how you are getting traffic, don’t say that by SEO because your site is new and you wouldn’t be credible.
I always say I have an email list of subscribers and will be sending emails to my list. But if you use this idea, remember to have a subscription box for a newsletter at your site which will show you may have subscribers.
 
I do quite a lot of affiliate marketing and as @Fussganger says you need to prove you can deliver potential sales to get approved for most affiliate programs and certainly the best ones.

I create niche specific lead magnets to build opt-in email lists, bigger the list easier it is to convince them to accept you to their affiliate program.

That's really great insight and advise! Thanks, I'll definitely do that!! I wasn't planning on having a newsletter though, is there some other means of asking for (and creating) an email list other than a newsletter?

So you had me until the creating "lead magnets"...what does that look like or consist of? What are you offering in return for their email address / info?

That's excellent, thanks!! That gave me some good ideas.

So when you're planning a website, what's the procedure you use to plan out all the pages, layouts and look? Is there a free or low cost program you use to plan everything out before you send to a website developer?
