http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2436051/English-lingua-franca-Europeans-thirds-speak-language-squeezed-rivals.htmlThe report published by the EU statistics arm Eurostat suggests that the dominance of English is likely to become even greater in the future.
It found that 94 per cent of secondary school pupils and 83 per cent of primary age pupils across the EU are learning English as their first foreign language, more than four times as many as learn French, German or Spanish. Only in Britain and Ireland is French the top foreign language in schools.
BS, just because they don't speak it everyday doesn't mean they aren't able to. The majority of people that are not wanting to speak it are doing it for either nationalistic reasons or they lack the confidence, not because they don't some basics of it. As for being in a store no communication is really required. I probably said only 25 different words at most in the last decade of going to stores to buy things.

I was taught France and English in 13 years of school in Europe. I didn't remembered either one living there. I don't remember anything about France and I had to learn English by my self after school.
Where do you think lack of confidence comes? From being able to speak it? No, they just don't know, expect a few words. If you hang out with 'modern' people, they know little bit of English in most cases. But that's just students basically. And they too will forget it sooner or later. The rest of the people don't. It's embarrassing when I go in some groceries stores and they can't even understand basic English.
And no, almost no one uses Internet in English in big countries where they have their own language.
You are generalizing.
Source: I lived in Europe for 17 years of my life.
So were you just not watching many good movies ? Its really hard to believe claims of 13 years of learning a language in school and forgetting it so quickly.
In this town no one is killed in last 5 years maybe, 1 car crush per month, you can walk alone in 4am with pockets full of money and no one will try to rob you.
It's great, it was most beautiful town in ex. Jugoslavia.
Nowdays, you can't find piece of paper on the road, grass is perfect, no homeless dogs, clean air, no factories.
Average monthly salary is 300$ and if you can make 1000$ online, you can live like a boss here.
Bottle of Jack Daniels in club is 25$, drinks are like 1-3$.
Hotel room is 10$, car fuel is 1$/liter.
Amazing place to live, if you have some money.
Also, this is weather for april/may.
