When I had my first IP address there were less than 100,000 people on the net and the web hadn't been invented - but then my first commercial computer was a DEC RSTS machine with 32Kb memory and 2 removable 1.2 Mb disks. We had 8K space for BASIC programs - and I could still run 4 terminals, a complete payroll and accounts system for a company of 500 employees. Al Gore - No. I was there before him ;)

On the basis of the original question - these are the techie things you obviously missed...

The first ARPANET link was established between the University of California, Los Angeles and the Stanford Research Institute on 22:30 hours on October 29, 1969....

ARPANET became the technical core of what would become the Internet...

As the Internet grew through the 1980s and early 1990s, many people realized the increasing need to be able to find and organize files and information.

One of the most promising user interface paradigms during this period was hypertext.

In 1989, whilst working at CERN, Tim Berners-Lee invented a network-based implementation of the hypertext concept

For his work in developing the world wide web, Berners-Lee received the Millennium technology prize in 2004.

Therefore - the beginning of the internet was approx 1969. The beginning of the web was 1989.
