I wish a “try before you buy” option was more prevalent. I too try to use nulled themes to evaluate and if I like them and they work as needed, I buy the license. Usually from Themeforest. When starting out I bought a few themes based on front end demo that were crap or didn’t do what i needed them too. Never deploy nulled themes, learned this the hard way.

You are spot on. Nulled themes that trade hands online are generally someone's project to deploy trouble.
There are some good shares here that are purchased/clean however you should always use caution when getting something online.
If you need something specific I would help you out, and Festinger still has an active share here that is HQ and you can trust.

theme forest seems to have a monopoly over the game.
I've never gotten a theme from here but get all different types of templates for photoshop and such. I'm pretty sure they have WP themes though: CreativeMarket.com
Also...since I find that so many themeforest themes & plugins are meh after purchasing, I always try to find a nulled version to test. WPLocker and Gfxhustle has a lot of nulled themes and plugins from themeforest/codecanyon. But you definitely still need to get the licenses for long term use as they don't always have the most up to date version and even so, they can be a bit buggy. I am NOT endorsing this as an alternative to buying the theme license, it is simply recommended for testing to see if the theme/plugin is a fit for your needs.
I tend to only use themes that I can disable responsive mode. For some reason they think everyone wants to buy all these themes with intricate designs and effects just for it all to be gone on mobile devices...no thank you! lol. Discovering WPLocker and GFXHustle really helped me because theme creators don't seem to fully give a good yay or nay on disabling responsive mode in their themes and sometimes I can disable it myself within the coding...but I got to test it first!
