when will websites not be something people need anymore?

hey

what are peoples opinions on websites?

when are they not going to be a thing anymore.

Google are clearly trying to get rid of them with platforms like AMP.

Lots of small businesses are now focussing on facebook and social instead.

the big google are now serving lots of content directly in the serp results pages also, kind of making websites pointless

voice search is going to be the hot new thing in 2018 for a good 5 years also, again websites are not needed for this

wix and square space and other DIY solutions are huge now...

Do you think we are approaching the end of this era?

what will replace them

The AMP project still requires the websites to exist for updated information as that's where they pull the content from. Unless they incentivise content creation specifically for AMPs only, I don't see this causing the death of modern websites. Keep in mind that AMPs are currently only served on mobile devices as well.

Small businesses rarely know what they're doing when it comes to marketing (or at least the ones in a 350 mile radius to me). A majority of the small businesses I search for when I'm out looking for clients are using the same old tactics day in and day out. My favourite part is when they get a few likes from their friends and family and assume everything they're doing is working.

Featured snippets are just summarised versions of the content in Google. People who want more information will visit the website.

A good example of that is the keyword "how to tie a shoe".

Sure, it tells you how to do it in the featured snippet, but if you want videos and image tutorials that show you exactly what you need to do, then you visit the website.

Are you talking about those home assistant devices like Google Home? I haven't looked into this one much, to be honest.

The DIY solutions have their niche, which usually consists of broke businesses. Most other businesses care about their brand identity and want a website made by a "professional" that reflects that.

The best reference to this I have heard is that google is making the internet into islands. Websites won't go away, but we are being packed into niches by Google. All your news, products, etc. is being pre-filtered by google to your liking. Making it hard to find opposing views. To me, this sounds like there is an opportunity for a new google that is less customized. Basically, google 1.0. Which as soon as it becomes profitable, google will just release "Google classic, a classic vintage of google for those with a discerning taste"
 
Amazon is killing ecommerce sites with the echo and dot, bye bye amazon affiliate sites. How long before Ebay catch up and bring out their own version?

This topic is really interesting and its meaningful, I have thought this myself for many times (because I didnt jump the Website Building bandwagon on time, I mean now, I have no website, so I think like this: If I build websites now, will it or those sites soon become useless along the time, consider the nowadays world tech is developed so fast ?)

But I think the website thing will not die, at least in a 10-20 years period, why?

I think people are still people, fresh human, not robot, yet..... so we can not be like a robot in the novel or movie which know everything, that means we still need learn knowledge, need search questions, queries, so the search engine will still exist for a "long time" , only, the activities form may change like you said above:

from Text Search ------> Voice ---------> VR/AR/MR in a very quick time?

To be honest I have no idea, but seems in a "short time", building websites is still a long-term investment, I need to jump as soon as possible lol.

I would like to hear other suggestions and ideas.

If only all the "is something dead" stupid threads were discussed in a very rational way like this. To give my 2 cents:

Having some big companies and names relying on websites/pages for displaying or offering their services or products (it can be literally anything), and seeing that all these brands operating in long term projects, then no , the website concept is no where near to be dead.

The streaming services are a very good example of why you can concider websites a thing to remain for long. I can't imagine a porn site using something else rather than a website to display their videos. They may change the streaming technology, but it will always be through a website in some part.


They can call it whatever they want. But it always will be a website.
 
I don't understand this place so far I have seen a member with 16000 posts complain that members with 20 posts are posting too much and so far people would rather make shit and fart jokes than discuss SEO

I think I might read more and post less until I get the feel of it all, didn't mean to offend guys

All the replacements you mentioned are.. Guess it... Websites. Facebook, twitter, YouTube, google, square space are all websites. It's not clear what you mean by websites.

I thought this topic was going to be about mobile apps or desktop programs or similar replacing web-sites. But as a understand it's about websites replacing other websites?
