When Will Google Die?

I know it's cool so beat on Google, but you know what? It's a good search engine, the best around by far. Yes it's worrying that it's monopolistic, but it's got a monopoly because it's the best.
All I will say is Google pay your taxes.

as long as i have google, i have money :) that simple.
wouldn't like to start bothering about new algorythms. imaging a 50-50% share between google and another SE, each with different algorithms - would be a nightmare to do seo for both.

All those wouldn't be gone, they will always be on the internet... Googles only purpose is to find all those things easier

Google is in business because they supply that demand to find things on the internet

If Google died, another company would supply that demand

In other words, the business that supplies this demand would only die if the internet as a whole died

You are wrong but only in your last sentence.
Please let me correct you. "...the business that supplies this demand would only die if"human curiosity, human need of knowledge would disappear. As long as humans want to learn, to know more things, there will always be business that supply information in an ordered way. What is the internet but a huge library? Google is just the best index to use it.

If anyone is able to make good search engine that's Facebook. If I were Mark, I'd start making new search engine right now, in a month, Google would notice at least 10% of traffic drop.

Do you really believe that?!?
In what way do you find FB similar to a SE?
A Social Network is quite different form a Search Engine, although our friend the big G is getting more and more social, I would hardly call it a social network...

@Scritty, while Google's main income comes from PPC/search, that's not all they're into. Also, Google would not just disappear in a cloud of dust, they would most likely be cannibalized or assimilated by other companies. All the servers, know-how and workforce. So it would not be an extinction but more like a rebranding in practice. Unless a company will come up with a search algorithm that will be significantly better than Google's, then you will have the same Google under a different mask.

Just my 2c, please feel free to give me a different POV, I enjoy constructive talks.

I couldn't agree more with you, but do you consider google is yahoo under a different mask? Or was there a paradigm shift when google was created? Couldn't we see another paradigm shift in the future? I bet that in the late 90s all the other SE didn't saw that coming or else they would have taken measures to evolve to something better. Because in this industry either you evolve or die. Most of the users here are on their 20s or younger so they may not know the internet as it once was. But I remember back in the days when Altavista was THE shit(now is just shit :D), then came Yahoo, then Google, then... My opinion is that the Internet is always evolving, so it is very hard to predict its future. Now the future seems social as all morons have access to a computer or any mobile device with internet and use them 99% of the times to go to Twitter or FB and post stupid stuff, but who knows? Some people are already getting fed up of all this social network thing... The internet is made by people and people are unpredictable. And that is why governments want to control it. Anything that is unpredictable and has the magnitude of the Internet is a potential menace to those in power.

BTW this is also just my 2c, and I do love constructive talks(it's one of the best way to learn stuff), so please do give me your feedback! Aren't we in a forum?;)

If all the other search engines die off, there's an opportunity for a new SE, start coding!

Then there's all the data centers, servers, infrastructure, networking, not to mention the man-power needed to run and maintain it. And then there will need to be people that will make sure that the search engine doesn't turn into a viagra spammed information super highway...

The bigger they are the harder they fall. And their fall becomes epic.

I'm not talking about current FB model. They have in-built search engine but main use of it is to search people. If FB have been made a search engine and put it somewhere in the middle of index page and say "Use bar above to search the net" people would definitely look into it and search for stuff online.

It wouldn't affect their social networking model too much, it would be less annoying than implementing timeline a while ago.
They wouldn't even need to push it too much like Google is forcing G+ to its users.

google is great search engine
and i use it every time for fonuding good thing entire world.
CHEERS!!!!

I think this thread would be fun to parse through in a reasoning 101 class. Seems like everyone is conflating their dislike of Google's operating practices with a generalized dislike of Google.

To the real question, Google may eventually start to lose some ground in the search engine game, but it's more likely that the search engines as we know them will simply become obsolete. In effect, Google glasses/Siri and other advanced AI software are already moving us in that direction. Once we have the ability to interact with our search engines, a monopolistic power like Google will be so entrenched it's hard to imagine another company stealing the show. Google is so far ahead I seriously doubt we will see their downfall in the next 20 or 30 years.

Like somebody else mentioned above, Google is a corporation which is only interested in profit.
No money, no Google and no spam and no low quality sites.

As soon as we change from the monetary system to a better solution Google will die with all other companies banks and money making machines.

Don't ask me what is the solution I am talking about cuz I don't know it but there shoud be an option other than money and greed.

:nap:

Asking when Google will die is like asking when Facebook is going to die, when Twitter will die, when the internet die, when the United States will die, when you will die. No one knows and your not gonna know until it happens, so just calm down and enjoy stuff while it lasts because nothing lasts forever.

It could be that I am but honestly, at this point I don't even know who the f*** I am myself.

Infoseek Hotbot Lycos AltaVista ruled the SE world back in the late 90's (it was so easy to score with them by the way)
We all thought it was the end of the world when they fade away.

There's always something else to replace the old ones. Always

OK, I have read 2 pages of this thread and I need to start writing
before I forget all the things I want to say and then I will continue to
read the rest of the thread.
I first got online in 1996 and started making a living from web
designing right away. This was just great as I was one of the earlier
people at least in my city that used the web to make a living and I
loved it. I made great money through 2008 to 2010, averaging 100k plus
per year profit and at least 30% of that was from Google. So why do I
hate Google so much? The answer is that the Internet and everyone who
wants to make money online would be so much better off without Google
and especially in the longer term. We are slowly seeing how much they
are controlling us and what we can do and what we can't do online.
I have watched and seen it all over the last 16 years or so I have been
online. I have seen when we had a multitude of search engines to choose
from, Yahoo, Alta vista, Web Crawler, Lycos and the list goes on. You
never had any one SE that you would use back in those days as finding
stuff was different, you had to SEARCH. It was not handed to you on a
plate like it is now and your bum wiped at the same time by big daddy
(Google).
(I'm restricted to how much I can write in one post so unfortunately I must split this post up ggrrr)
... continued below....
