All those wouldn't be gone, they will always be on the internet... Googles only purpose is to find all those things easier
Google is in business because they supply that demand to find things on the internet
If Google died, another company would supply that demand
In other words, the business that supplies this demand would only die if the internet as a whole died

I think that sometimes it pays to talk to some of the "normal" people who exist outside of our internet marketing obsessed world....

There's a pretty simple solution to this: use another search engine.
Regarding the OP: there's a reason Google is king of search - it delivers relevant results to people's queries - some might say better than other search engines do. That's it. There's nothing else that keeps people using a particular search engine. It's how Google took so much of search away from Altavista, Yahoo! and every other search engine that existed before they got big. If Google stops delivering relevant results people will go elsewhere. It's not as though there's huge barriers to leaving Google and using a competitor.

Yes, i think the solution to make the consumer`s experience better is through Competition.
Right NOW, Google is the leader in terms of SE. Right now, but NOTHING in this world lasts forever...and when they will be gone, their true nature would be revealed.
Think mass control, media and how easy is today to change peoples minds through a News, a tweet or a like...

At a point in history, Google had less SE Market than Yahoo! Bing wasnt there yet, Altavista was.

I don't think Google will ever die but it wont always be on top look at how myspace used to be on top or social networking then facebook came and a lot of people forgot about it. Myspace is still there and making big profits but a lot of people don't look past what is on top luckily there are a lot of people on the Internet so the smaller % of people that use the smaller sites still like myspace etc still works out to be a lot of people lol. That is also why you can still get sales on niche sites and everyone dose not just buy it right from amazon.

Any company operating with almost "monopoly" sized market sharte in a free market has a shelf life as number 1.
Even Coke has to share (and now represents barely 48% of all cola drinks and under 35% of all sodas)
Google isn't a monopoly, and it's working at an almost monopoly level market share.
That's a vacuum situation where year on year the pressure just builds up and up.
Already more social searches are done on Facebook than Google (though social searches are a waste of time for most marketing types)

One company beating them to a major new innovation that everyone just loves
No-one (well not 99.999% of people) has any emotional attachment to Google what-so-ever.
If they are scandalized, or found lacking when another SE comes with a better system or new idea.
They could be gone in the 10 seoconds it takes to change the default search engine settings in your browser
IBM, Myspace, Ford motor company, Commodore, British Steel ...... Household names - untouchable - now a shadow of their former selves.
NB I'm talking about NONE MONOPOLY MARKETS only here - and no business entity in the history of all business has kept an 80% + market share in a none monopoloy market for 20 years. Google won't break that rule

Yea Probasah - but it is not just a matter of mind control via tweets and viral news, you also need mega millions to take on the giant. The average Joe out there in the real world only thinks of Google when it comes to Internet search. Google has already managed to control the minds of the general public in an effective manner and it can take years to change that perception - if at all. And we are not even talking about the superior search technology, patented algos, etc, - not to mention the politico-economic reach of the big G. Nothing is going to happen in the near future and G is going to rule the roost for some time to come. In any case, people like us also do not want G to completely die. All said and done, we earn much more through Google than all other SE combined, in spite of the constant updates and algo changes that the company makes. Yea, it would be great if there are one or two viable alternatives for google (bing is one), from an SEO perspective. Till such time that happens, all of us will rant and crib but will still be reliant on the big G because the general public uses it.
