When I build a backlink, can Google see my IP address?

Depends. When you comment on a blog they can. They can't see your IP if you create a link on a Web 2.0

i dont think they can. They access the web site where the link is made, its really impossible for them to know from which IP the link is made...until and unless , your back link is on blogger or other google related site.

If you are building like 100s of links everyday to your site then you may fall under their watch list ! This looks unnatural ! doesn't it ? That's why people are using proxies for mass backlinking ! Just my 2 cents !!

But this doesn't mean that they can see you IP !! Not sure :S

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm only creating a few backlinks per day. About 6 - 10. And most of them are social signals from Facebook and twitter accounts. Very low competition for this keyword that I'm going after, but I've gone from out of page 300 to position 29 in the past week.

Saying that, I am linking from a few web 2.0 properties that I built last June for another site, but they are still sending some good link juice.

They can't see your IP address.

They can see plenty though if you are logged into google or using chrome though. Of possibly posting on blogspot.

The main thing you need to be wary of is leaving a suspicious footprint (all blog posts, forum sigs, etc). Set the levels you are talking about, nothing to worry about.

No google can't see your IP address while building backlinks unless the site on which you are building itself publish the member IP address.

No, not without them hacking into the sites you're posting your links on, and tracking traffic that way..... so unless you really think they break federal laws in order to find out which ips are being used to drop some back links on some sites, then this is a non issue. The only reason to use proxies and such to build mass linksis to prevent the sites you are posting on from banning your accounts, or services such as Akismet from flagging your ip.

It's true that it looks very unnatural if you are building 100s of backlinks every day to a fresh site. But people are not using proxies for mass backlinking because they think Google will figure out it's the same person who's backlinking. Rather it's to not be banned for multiple submissions/accounts on the same websites by those websites in question. Also I recall reading that recaptcha (might have been another captcha or platform though) will only allow you to send a fixed amount of captcha requests for a fixed amount of time from the same IP, which is also a very good reason to use proxies.

I really don't understand from where the paranoia comes that Google somehow sees everything which goes on behind the scenes of websites.

Unless they run the site on which you're building the link, they can't see your IP...

Great info. Thanks.

When you create a backlink, google knows your IP, name, address, bank account information, family status, buying preferences, height and weight and even the socks you have on while doing it. Not joking.

Looooool. And SEO is also dead, right?

As others said. They can't- the sites that you post links on would have access to your ip, but unless they post that information publicly then no, google would not have access to it.

Are you serious?
That's why we're using Private proxies? Ah,and I thought we were using them to avoid getting banned on sites where we post/spam constantly :D

Google can ONLY read what's on the site source and make it's assumptions from there. There are no popular platforms for link building that are displaying the publisher's IP,at last,I don't know any!
Unless google made a special filter to monitor the ip's of some platform displaying IPs,the answer will always remain,NO!

Then you have your answer don't you? As far as I know they show part of the IP to the webmaster, surely they don't store the IP in full for themselves. lolz

um... google knows everything. They can't see your IP unless they own the site. Or you are using chrome, or you have a google plug in on the browser you are using, or you went to that site from a google owned property, or you have a google cookie on your system at the time, or...

This is the company that is able to predict where the flu outbreak will begin each year based upon the data they have. They probably can tell you where you will put that backlink two days before you ever thought of it.
