It could be a good thing to just boost the number up in general. I would think people would most likely follow an account with more followers than an account with not so much. Maybe human nature? People love being in the in crowd more so than alone, i would say the only downside is bad engagement rate if the followers were fake if bought from a panel.
Other than that, i see no real downside but take my word with a grain of salt as i'm still a newbie myself with trying to grow on IG in general.

As an unethical way to make money you could use 50$ to get 100.000+ followers on your account and then use a bot to DM people with less than 10 posts, meaning they are new members and try to sell them shoutouts, or invest 1000$ to grow a few dozen accounts past 100.000 and sell power likes, or use them to give power likes to your smaller accounts. Or if you are good at marketing you could send 100 of emails to some brands or companies and send them the link to your fake 100.000 followers accounts and ask them if they want a cheap promotion.

well I fell for it once, and it doesn't mean I'm stupid. the comments were all made from real looking accounts with real looking followers and their likes and bio and picture everything checked out. It's hard to know the difference between real and fake accounts these days.
