When did "Newbies" get so .....

Give some people a crayon they think they can write Shakespeare, give others a computer and they think they can do IM. I do agree that without negative rep self-policing by the community is no longer effective or feasible!

I agree with you but it is frustrating when people don't do basic searches or query Google.
Some will even continue to ask when it has been suggested to spend some time reading and searching, sometimes even waiting a few days and starting another thread asking the same question.
Then when you do help them, they disappear and you never see them again lol.
I don't mind helping genuine people but sometimes I get the feeling some people ask questions just for the sake of it and they have no real intention of taking any action.
I don't mind stupid questions if the asker has at least attempted to find the answer, we were all new to this at one point.

I could not agree more but have you considered that you could find a valuable ally just by simply giving them guidance? I have found important friends like this and its just a nice thing to do really. No big deal you know?

I mean its not like we are actually working too hard if we have time to be surfing this forum and bitching about how people ask questions here. You know what I mean?

I do agree neg rep was useful but not vital. Over time we will all forget about it and still gain value from each other I think.

The truth is that many of these people you label as dumb are just newcomers who don't understand they are not allowed to ask questions that most of us know the answer to. They do not understand they will get flamed for asking them. they think that this forum is where they can find the answers they are looking for. We have all been there do not deny this. Some people are obviously brighter then others and learn faster. Such is life.

I am not sure if in the rules of the forum it is stated that you can't ask questions that are deemed "stupid questions" by the community but even if it is there in the rules most people do not study the rules or even read them. I know it gets annoying to have to answer these type questions but everyone does have the option of just ignoring these type questions instead of insulting some poor soul and making them feel like shit. You know what I mean hatemachine?

It's not about asking questions, it's about what kind of questions they're asking. I don't have a problem with helping newcomers, see my threads where I developed free tools and helped hundreds of people using them. We've been all there, that's not the issue. The issue is asking dumb questions that they could have answered themselves googling for a minute. If you prefer asking basic questions on a forum and waiting for an answer rather than googling and figuring it out yourself you won't make it in IM. If you're too lazy to execute such a simple task, then you won't make it. In the end; I don't really care, merely wanted to point out that there's no fix for this.
