How did you guess what Midnight was about? Somewhere in the byzantine labyrinth of my storage unit I still have all the CD's that operated Midnight. Midnight BBS ran on OS/2.

Gopher was sort of amusing, every one in a while you would find a coke machine, run the program and it would tell you how many cans were in the machine and the temperature of each can.

Nobody liked getting neg repped but the good thing was if somebody got negged for posting crap it tended to make them stop and think.

Now if somebody posts crap and gets called out, they ignore it or scream abuse at whoever disagrees with them.
If the crap thread they started gets deleted they just immediately start a new one.

Also it acted as a form of moderation when the Mods weren't around.
Spammers and scammers could be negged before they took advantage of noobs.

There may have been minor abuse of the system but that could have been rectified by not allowing people to neg rep anonymously.

Anyway, it is gone but I look back fondly on the good old days lol

They know how to use it they are just lazy to use it and want everything right now without any effort. Why to bother spend time on searching something when you can just post one question and get spoon fed.
 
I have always been against removing the Rep System. It's what made BHW after all.

I asked for it to be given to Mods and Jr Exec. Let's not forget the number of scams happened because of high rep numbers. Reps Points were good indicator. Abusing it was bad. Why didn't we solve the abusing problem instead of removing it !

Anyway, I can certainly see its almost impossible to complete any journey with the flood of messages you get!

Just a quick correction. They do not want you to spoon feed them. They want you to give your money to them. They all think that they can earn quick cash in the internet without even doing anything. All methods that earns money have a step by step process that needs to be followed in order for you to make some cash. Newbies nowadays tend to post wanting some methods to help them $x,xxx amount in just a day. They always want the easy way around which I believe doesn't exist.

There are a lot of informative threads in the forums but they just ignore it. BHW even has a section on the right side which has a subtitle of MAKING MONEY. Why aren't looking there. When I first came to the site that's the first section I explored.
 
It's great to see this thread got so many replies that go along with my thoughts to.

One of the worst things I see in my threads is this. Something I'm sure you have all seen to.


Newbie - I've been looking for a method like this for ages. Great method, some real good money to be made here ...... I won't do it myself .... But great method

You wonder why they are even here.
 
In-fact I see another way that the reputation could be used.
Users having < 100 posts can be neg-repped
No one can be pos-repped.
All neg rep counts -5
Once the user has 100 posts, everything is lifted off and has a flat reputation as now.

This way we could filter out the bad posts, yet give that user a chance to contribute more!

But seriously, as someone who is trying to start his own respectable journey and stop being called a newbie, I can answer you. I think it is the fault of some shiny thread titles, that make internet money making sound so easy. It also raises their hope, that's why when they read through your journey or method they accept you to throw money at them without any effort. And yes, more and more stupid people are now surfing the internet......

Only new users can be neg repped...not a bad idea.

But what if they get targeted and neg repped out of spite/competition/being a silly but innocent noob?

It could work if the neg reps were individually monitored by a mod, like reporting a thread or post, but that's so much work.

Aren't we all breaking the rules right now talking about rep?

The quality isn't diminishing, only the volume of members joining and how openly they voice their ignorance. I would say that people now days are just lazy as f* and want everything served on their plates...
 
Yeah people are expecting everything to be readily available for them right away and right now. I have been on the internet since 96 and back then it was tough finding anything useful at all. Nowadays people are so used having access to everything right away that I sometimes I get questions like. "Hey can you teach me php quickly" :)

actually the removal was a good thing...even i abused it [ once ] 1 time
but i admit my 1 mistake...i was at 3990 rep and i admit i asked a then friend
to do me 1 rep in 2012. looking back it was foolish just to have 4k

funny thing that came out of it was, this so called friend threw it in my face on
the forum last year, not because i had said anything bad to him, but because
i stated it was a matter of time b4 ste hughes over stepped and got banned.

and my so called friend attacked me out of the blue with no provocation
reminding me about the 1 extra rep he gave me..KVM
thankfully ide already confessed my sin to a mod and all was forgiven.

my point - looking back - rep means sht, post count mean sht
a few people here are 2 faced.
being a decent person , seller on this forum is all most of us have.
u loose that , then its time to go. which is why i fly solo

I agree, we should bring back rep, but also add counters for infractions and permabans.
