I remember when people on bhw were talking about not requiring HTTPS, and how they weren't going to migrate, too much hassle, not worth it etc. lol

I'm taking bribes not to reveal any names!! hahah I'm not really, I've got a goldfish memory for those long gone days of old.

So what can you remember that turned out to be strange on reflection? It would be interesting to hear others take a trip down memory lane, and give us all a history lesson! lol

This was about 10 years ago... I was still a lurker then.

A member signed up at BHW and claims he is gay. He even upgraded his membership to 'donor' (the pink one).

One day, he created a thread and asked members that he is looking for photos of wee-wee and he will paypal anyone who sends a picture of their wee-wee. Up to $50 depending on "size".

Initially, many members were skeptical but one by one suddenly started posting messages like "sent". Naturally, some members may have been lured and sent their pics of their wee-wee.

The OP would periodically update the thread saying things like, "Just paypal-ed $20 to a guy... because his wee-wee is small. Sad."

I forgot what exactly happened after that, but I remember the thread was live for a several days. Then one day, the OP just paste a link to a zip file and said something like, "Zip file contains all the d*ck pics and the filename is the member's name".

The thread was locked and the member was banned immediately after that.

What's wtf is I remember another BHW member still created a thread and asked where that OP went as he has sent a pic of his wee-wee but didn't get paid for it.

What a wild week, I remember. I still couldn't believe that happened till this day.

But this is not SEO related. :p

This makes for the day! I almost forgot what I was to add, to be honest.

Back in the early days of Google when I worked as a web dev, there was a local SEO company that told their customers they had a special deal with Google and added in a meta tag like this:
Code:
<meta name="GooglePartner" content="1rlihlYKhMybkqe3UKTtM32ynQyClFrL">
for the princely sum of £300 per month, saying that it guaranteed top 5 positions (for easy longtails if the client ever queried). Pure snakeoil shite merchants.

Increase high DA is the only ranking way. Create more and more backlinks and get the rank in top position. This the only memory I remind. I think it's almost 10 years back thinking.

Some people still think that increasing DA helps with ranking, even here on BHW.

Yeah, I saw still many person increase the DA and DR. I think they mostly offer PBn or Guest post service as well.

I remember my first website was a web 2.0 with a single image. That was about 17 years ago.

All text and graphics were included in it. Similar to BSTs here.

Needless to say it didn't rank for anything.

I have populated the alt tag by some miracle though.

I once set a backlink in a guestbook of a bakery here in Germany manually and said, that I enjoyed their farmer's bread while driving through the village.
One week later, I actually got a package via by DHL from this very bakery with a whole bread in it, send to the address in my imprint and with a thanks node for the nice comment.
I actually felt guilty, as I never visited this place =D

I remember when google hijacked all my other browsers when I was logged into gmail and I couldn't do any SEO for a few.

Now you can say you really earned your own bread through SEO.

This is some fucked up shit! And hilarious as well!

Funnily enough. I was just checking my old sites and competitors from 2015 (seems like yesterday). Most websites have disappeared (including mine) but only one is still hanging in there and making good $$$ even in this environment ( I assume). Respect.

I have got a few from 2007-2008 -

1. Wickedfire was a massive clown show with people shooting the shit and ranking stuff for funny terms in competition.

2. The IM space being dominated by Shoemoney, John Chow, and Problogger.

3. All you had to do to rank was stuff a bunch of meta keywords and point a few backlinks at your page and that was it. No AI/Penguin/Panda/RankBrain nonsense.

Makes me nostalgic. Time really does fly.

When adwords first began this was seo...

Buy emd.
Run google ads to it.
Within a few days you would be ranking on page 1!

You should've visited them and bought a pack of bread as a reverse thank you for their gesture. ;)

I certainly would have.

Not funny, but about 16 years ago, my wife had her own business and I built her website with Joomla. I had zero SEO knowledge but still managed to rank her site first locally and second nationally just by using keywords, no backlinks, PBNs etc, when SEO was easy!
