coffecup. the only thing that really annoys me about it is, you need the save the html page before you can look at it??? how weird is that. otherwise it's decent for editing php pages and crap

Dreamweaver is my favorite for coding.
Notepad++ (or even MS notepad) is also great for them who knows how to work with their code.
Artisteer 2.x is the best for those who just want to create fast WP, Drupla or Joomla templates (the standard HTML templates one can make with it sux) without need of knowing any HTMl or PHP.

Using any editor seems to me a waste of time for most of the webs that will be designed for SEO purposes. Of course use one for your money site and maybe a top-level feeder or three. But for the rest go to some page that has free css templates and grab a dozen or so. Simple. Elegant. Time saving. Cheap.

notepad++ in not a wysiwyg editor..i have always used dreamweaver, from what i hear nvu is also good..do a search in sourceforge for free html editors..i am sure you will get many..

I've just never really got the hang of using any html editors. Every time I've tried one the code it produces just seems so jumbled together with lots of uneccessary bits of extraneous tags.
Maybe if I would stick with one and really work with it for awhile I would like it. I just always end up having to go back through the code to change so much. It seems to work better for me just working with the code from the start.

I use html-kit, which is free and handles just as many languages as dreamweaver, which I also use. I generate raw code in notepad too.

It is a raw code editor That automatically handles each of the major coding languages and color codes them like a wyswig. It works for raw coding as well as more cookie-cutter dynamic features in one. It is the perfect crossover if you want a platform to start from.
I build ALL of my own code raw anyway but this editor makes it super easy to catch any mistakes, typo issues, etc.
You have complete control over the use of raw build or cut and paste elements/plug-ins.
It is completely free. Try that on for size.

I've never even bothered to try notepad++. I started using Crimson Editor when I needed to troubleshoot oscommerce or wordpress sites because it gives line numbers and you can have wordwrap on and tell the difference between a wordwrap line and a new line. Other than that just using regular old notepad has always worked good enough.
Partly I like to use tools that I know will be on EVERY computer I might use. That way if I'm someplace and anyone asks for help I know for sure they will have at least the basic tools I can use.
It probably makes me seem like a dinosaur sometimes. LOL
I'll probably give this editor a try since it probably makes it simpler to catch open tags. Sometimes nested divs and tables get confusing to make sure all the closing tags are done and in the right order.

+1. Just did a search for HTML editor on sourceforge and that's the first thing that came up. Been using it ever since (cept when I need to make a quick theme with Artisteer for a quick cheapo autoblog). Never really had another editor to compare it to (except notepad++ on my linux systems) so one day I might play around with a few others...
Never touched Dreamweaver. I'm not one for big fat adobe products, I've got a knock-off PDF reader & the print spooler program because Adobe programs just seem very slow and clumsy in my opinion.
