What's the worst that could possibly happen?

Today I lost my Debit card, fortunately I called my bank and got them to cancel the card before anyone could use it, I should receive a new card soon :).
But what I've been wondering is if I hadn't noticed that my card had gone missing and some shady person had found it, what's the worst that could of possibly happened besides them withdrawing the money? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere, I was thinking that they could of used my details for something..or possibly put me in debt but it's a debit card so I suppose they would only be able to withdraw the money that I already have on it.


What are your thoughts on this?

Nothing really did you report and sign a police report if they used it somewhere
 
Debit card needs a PIN to withdraw here. Whoever found it might be able to do shopping with your card.
 
They would of only really been able to empty your bank account of your hard earned cash. Unless your account had an overdraft facility they wouldn't be able to put you in debt.

I think they could find out your pin by somehow manipulating the chip on the front.

But the likely hood of your debit card landing in the wrong hands by dropping it in the street or something is highly unlikely.
 
I had my card cloned (copied) and used to withdraw around $1000 using an atm in another country. Once i found out, called the bank to cancel the card and (going by your location) in the UK this is counted as fraud by the bank and legally this is a theft from the bank not from you personally. So the bank are obliged to immediately refund me the money and then sent a disclaimer form to say i was not responsible and i authorize them to investigate the case using the police if necessary.

Lesson Learned: Always cover the keypad at the atm with one hand while entering your pin with the other.
