What's the best script for a social community?

For a social membership site, a dedicated server is the utmost essential to handle the bandwidth. I am also in the process of making one, and I really got some cool script help from this thread.

I'd start with something cheap and migrate to something else afterwards. Obviously you should learn how to migrate the software and DB's before you begin. If migrating is too much of a hassle then you need to either cough up the money for the higher end server or find a server admin who will do it for you later on down the road.

I dunno about the Dolphin script. I used to use it. THe clean version doesn't have chat or forums. You have to find a way to incorporate your own. The actual Dolphin 6.14 script is buggy, and many webhosting companies are unable to run it.

What hosting company are you using?

Integrating AOL's AIM and/or Skype is easy. And tacking on a themed forum in a subdomain seems like it would also relatively simple, as long as you don't care about linking with the membership database. That would make it a bit irritating.

Just on a side note, do you know how many servers facebook is running on?

10000 servers of which 3500 alone are for mysql!
Another script worth looking at is elgg which is totally free

wickid, are you running a paid site or is it a free site?

I run a free site...house it on my own server on a T1 line...so it doesn't really cost me much for hosting. If the site ever really gets huge I'm sure I'll have to move it elsewhere...but hopefully I'll be able to generate enough ad revenue to pay for it. If you want to check the site out its at

I'm currently putting one up together with Social Engine. I live in a city of about 60 000 people.

The city is known as a student city, when school starts the population raises by 12 %. So perfect for a social network. I expect to get between 4000 - 7000 members in less than 3 months hopefully the come once a day, to max out the banner impressions.

This city has ZERO web presence whatsoever ! Around the social network we want to present various events in clubs, theaters,

We already got sponsorships in the works with the city, beer company, and a radio station and other small companies for our Launch party to be held in a month.

Meanwhile we started some mystery mrketing technics, stickers with the adress of the website were theres an optin for to know when the site will be up. we have flyers left and right all over the city for the launch party we're having in the city's hotspot. We've
got some radio spots 4 time a day.

TO be honnnest all we had to shell out yet is 25$ for a VPS, got the script Nulled, 250$ for some flyers, the stickers and radio spots were sponsored.

My main concern at the moment if server power, I don't mind paying a little more, what would be the minimum configuration to handle 400-600 people on the site simultaniously.
we started all the promo a week and a half ago and we already have 1700 emails, When we're going to send out the email to the people telling HEY THE SITE IS NOW ONLINE !! I'm sure they will be lots of visitors, and I don't want the server to crash or to be slow as hell.

I think that you need to ask whoever created the software because they will know the realistic limits and requirements of the software. I'm starting to worry about simultaneous users myself so even though I really want to host at home, it might not be the best choice. I'm anticipating a sudden influx of traffic from facebook, digg, and prweb immediately after launch. I just need to survive the launch, just like you. I would love to have a server at home but mysql running on one machine and running the fb app in a separate datacenter might create too much lag. So I'm leaning towards Joyent.
