I am a new to the SEO field and trying to understand where to start. There are many topics like keywords, backlinks technical SEO, Content writing, and on page optimization, which makes it a bit confusing for beginners.

If someone is starting SEO from zero in 2026, what should they focus on learning first?

which skills are the most important for getting real results early on?

start with keyword intent + basic on-page, don’t jump into backlinks yet

learn how to use Search Console properly (indexing, queries, pages) this alone teaches you a lot
then focus on writing content that actually matches search intent, not just “SEO optimized” fluff

backlinks come later, otherwise you won’t know what’s actually working anyway.

I think a beginner should start with on page SEO basics like titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links and content structure. those fundamentals have the biggest beginner impact.

If you're starting SEO from scratch, focus first on understanding search intent, keyword research, and basic on-page SEO. Once you're comfortable with those, learn content creation and simple technical SEO. In my experience, creating useful content that matches what people are searching for can bring results faster than chasing advanced tactics too early.

seo is huge and a lot of old tactics are completely dead now. if you're starting from zero, just focus on recent google updates to see what they actually want. the whole game changed since ai took over tbh.
